Hey guys! Some of you might have heard that I rolled my 4Runner a month ago at Surf n Turf. I've been looking for a good 1st gen body for the past few months and I finally found a 87 4Runner body + frame!

Question 1: Since the body is already on a frame, can I put in my 86 22RE? (I mean legally, the 87 4runner has a clean title) because I have heard you cant put a older engine in a newer truck...

Question 2: The 87 4Runner had a 22RET turbo motor, will my motor, tranny, transfercase fit?

Technically, engine swaps are supposed to be same year or newer, but not sure how they could tell an '86 22RE from an '87 22RE. Only issue may be that the '87 VIN may say its a 22RET engine. Not sure if that would require a referee station to check on the swap or not.


Yes, motor mounts should line up, I think the t-case crossmember should also fit. You'll probably need to swap the 22RE ECU and possibly wiring harness in for the 22RET stuff (turbos have more sensors, etc.).

Thank you Roger!! I called a friend and he said he has to ask about the emissions problems I might run into. I think if the title is clean, I wouldnt need to go to a check up station. So the only thing im worrying about right now is when I get a smog check...
