The problem inverter was just plugged into the cig lighter of my corolla, so it was wired through the ignition. When I turned the key I think a voltage spike did it in (note: I did not attempt to start the engine, I only wanted to lower the power windows

that's interesting...

I remember reading some instructions with my made-for-car portable discman regarding keeping it off until after the car started or before shutting it down.

I think a 400 or (if i can find space under the hood) 1000 watt would be sweet w/ plugs down there.
Another reason why costco is like mods: you always find something you really seem to need!!!
