Power Antenna mod - mini write up

Well my power antenna was broken and I wasnt about to get another. The whip was a choice, but I decided to go cheap.

I purchased a cheap retractable antenna from an auto parts store.

I removed the power antenna unit by removing the inner wheel cover.

I then cut the slotted piece off power antenna tube and used a strong glue and attached it to the aftermarket antenna. You can see the part where the tube it cut its sitting next to the tire.

The purpose of doing this of course is to allow the factory antenna mount to still be used on the fender.

Antenna up

Antenna down

Its a real easy task, and took maybe 30 minutes.

Hey, thanks for posting this up. It may be on my list to do tomorrow, as my non-functioning antenna got bent off roading today. Being able to put it down when needed is a big plus.

Why doesn't anyone use the in-glass FM diversity antenna that is in the back passenger window?

IIRC those use a smaller than normal plug, so plugging that antenna into a factory deck requires changing that plug, something most don't know how to do.

DeathCougar - I have found another post from a guy that goes into more detail on this. Thanks for your response. Why you can not use the FM antenna in the window.

scuba - Because the tread is not locked and the fact that anytime anyone starts a new one they get told to search. I searched it put me into this thread and I posted. Also if I change the topic on a 4 year old thread then no one is going to mind to much and the information comes up in the search.

We do appreciate the searching. It makes for much less clutter. Scuba is just a mean old miser

I have found at Autozone a converter to go from the antenna cable that is in the back window into the after market radio that I have. I can not use 2 antennas but can use the built in one that is in the window that I wanted to use instead of the other ones any way. Oh yeah and it cost me $6.00

Part number is on the box just plug into radio and into the cable.

Sometimes you can't win. Get yelled out for not using the SEARCH feature when posting a new thread, and now you get yelled at for searching and bringing up an old thread with still useful information....
