Question Potential New Member: Looking for a 3rd Gen

Hey there. I've been toying the idea of getting a 3rd Gen 4Runner (yes, even with the gas crunch). I currently have an Infiniti I30t (5spd) that while I do enjoy driving, is not a truck. So, I'm looking for a 3rd Gen in a stick (which is my dilemma since I'm having difficulty finding one with decent mileage and good shape). My goal isn't to hit the trails (although in NYC, it would seem like it does), but to supercharge it. It's a perfect sleeper vehicle.

In any case, I've been trying to read all posts, and trying to figure out which 3rd Gen is right for me and my wallet. The difference between the 99+ and pre-99 is the front bumper and cupholders? Anything else? Is there any reason why I shouldn't look at a 97 or 98? Anybody have any suggestions on where to look? In NYC, most dealers don't carry manual tranny vehicles (especially SUVs) and a lot of the out of state cars have a ridiculous number of miles on them.

First off - welcome to the forum. Second, I'd want a auto in NYC, why shift in all the traffic? As for the 96-98 vs. the 99+, you are correct but don't forget the later models have a lot more electronic stuff like traction control, etc. I've seen several nice 99's on ebay.

Nah, my last several cars (with the exceptoin of a 94 Pathfinder) were all sticks. Most people believe that in NYC driving a stick is a pain in the butt. To me, it's second nature now so I don't have a problem with it.

What other electronic stuff can come with a 99+? Should I just hold out for a 99+? There seems to be quite a price difference between a 98 and a 99.

Heck yeah, stick all the way. Just keep looking. I had to fly to San Diego to get mine (not so bad )

I got my 96 with 66K for $16K in Feb '02. I paid a little more than I should have, but it was worth it. I knew the owner took very careful care of it (except the stinking clutch which was fried!).

I recently scored a 00 4Runner SR5 V6 4x4 with 18K miles for $15K on ebay. I turned it and made $3500. My point is that it can be done, you just have to keep your eyes peeled and be ready to pounce.

I know of a 1999 or 2000 (can't remember) 5 spd for sale that has all of the desirable options including locker and sport package, it is silver and super clean with 65k on it. It is in California though. here's the specs.

99+ 4runners have different bumpers, headlights, and center console for the most part. The cupholder is different and the 99+ limiteds had electronic climate control while the sr5's had rotary knobs instead of slide controls. Also in 99, the highlander edition (sport edition) was available with scooped hood and color-matched bumpers.

Sweet, but I can't justify the cost of the truck AND the plane ticket from NY to CA and travel expenses. Anybody know how much it costs to have someone ship it cross country?

$750 - $1000 across the country. Be sure to get references, shipping companies are known for thrashing rides.

Nah, then I don't want to risk it. Better off finding something on the east coast.
