You guys with factory 4.56 and 4.88 are lucky. If I only knew what to look for before I purchased... G294 a340h 3.0. Wait I mean 5spd 3.4. Ha!Ha!

I have a 98 4Runner Limited with elocker and my code is A04A...one website says I have 4:56 and the other says I have 4:30....I guess its time to spin the wheel and count the revs!

on my 1999 the axle code is A03A
03=4.10
A= 2 pinion
I think I have a 4.10 but I know my truck had a 4 pinion open diff becasue I took it out and saw for myself.

2nd Generation 4Runner.
Hi, guys I'm new here just wanted to share I have a 1990 4Runner 2WD automatic. My code is G252/A44D. Can anyone help me figure out with rear differential I have? Also I am in need of a new one so if any of you have one for sale in the Los Angeles area or can direct me in the right way greatly appreciated. Thanks

Mine is G292. But it's not correct. It should be G294. Because the rear axle it came with actually has a 4 pinion differential with 4.10 gears, confirmed by disassembly. Which is as it should be, since it's a V6. So...
Axle code: G292(incorrect should be G294)

Stock tire size: 225 75 R15

G254=4.56. kinda wish i had 4.10s because then a re-gear would be an obvious upgrade. as it is, 4.56 to 4.88 yields a not stupendous cost-to-performance gain.

Ugh I'm confused now. If some cars are label incorrectly it's all about trial and error I guess? I'm heading to the junkyard tomorrow and now I don't know what to look for. On my door jam it states G252/A44D. My 4Runner is a automatic 2wd 22re engine non ABS. Will a 4x4 rear differential fit my truck without any modifications if it's the same gear ratio?

Your axle code is G252. Which means you have an 8" 2 pinion differential w/4.56 gears.
A 4WD rear differential will fit your truck. And since it's a 4 cylinder 2WD, the gear ratio and/or the number of pinions it has don't matter. They're all 8" having 2 or more pinions(the more the better), and will fit anywhere another 8" will fit.
Simple enough?
Not so fast...
You might have to swap the companion flange from your old one for it to match your driveshaft bolt pattern. That's the only thing that might need "modification". But it's a fairly simple procedure should the need arise.
A 4WD rear differential will fit your truck. And since it's a 4 cylinder 2WD, the gear ratio and/or the number of pinions it has don't matter. They're all 8" having 2 or more pinions(the more the better), and will fit anywhere another 8" will fit.

Is your Tacoma an auto or manual? I initially thought that the gear ratio was based solely on your transmission, so for example 4Runner's with manual trans would be running 3.90 gears and the autos would be running 4.10, (4.30 with the rear locker), regardless of stock tire size.
Maybe the Tacomas are different than the 3rd gen 4Runners, but yours came with 225/75s and 4.10 gears. That's why I'm wondering about your transmission.
Is the gear ratio a combination of transmission and stock tire size? Not knowing what transmission is in the Tacoma it doesn't appear to be tied strictly to tire size if that 96 Tacoma came with 225s and 4.10 gears.

Differential gear ratio color codes
So I get to the junk yard this morning and no luck all the differentials were gone. In the parking lot I seen I guy that had a differential off a 2nd generation 4Runner. He asked me what color differential I was looking for? He had a yellow one? Does anyone know what color code each ration has? Is it accurate? I got the guys number incase I can use the one he had. Thanks again
