okay guys and gals, i have come up with an idea for my 4runner after a recent event that involved my ride. i just moved to college and the first night here, some SOB busted the right rear passenger and right rear quarter panel glass, and stole my system. so, i was wondering, what do you all think of this idea: somewhere on here i saw where someone made a storage type of device that was bolted down where the rear cargo area is, had pull-out type drawers, and the top was covered in OEM colored carpet so and you could still place gear on top of it. my qeustion is do you all think it would be possible to build one of these deals, and instead of having storage space, mount some subs in there and make the box some type of ported setup. i plan to make it as low as possible to the original cargo area floor, and for it to not look anything like a sound system from the outside. so please guys and gals, if you have any type of info or pics of anything close to what my idea is, feel free to help me out, as it would be greatly appreciated. btw, YOTATECH ROCKS!!!

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I wouldn't go to shallow though because then you could use it as storage along with space for the subs and amps. It's actually a pretty good idea for another reason, with my rig you have to open one of the doors to make the alarm go off. We've had a couple rigs on here now that have been broken into for systems and knowone ever opened a door to get the stuff out. If it's bolted into the back they would have to pretty much open the back door to get the stuff out.

What about the stock roll-out luggage cover? You could do heavy tint in the rear. We always like to see new custom cargo boxes, if you got the time and talent... do it.

yeah, that's the thing...i got to college, unloaded mine and my parent's car, and then immediately parked it in the student parking lot...to time to actually turn it up loud around here, as if i go with this idea i WILL NOT turn it up anywhere near campus. but thanks for all the info, but if ya got anymore tips, tricks, or info, please send it my way...thanks...

I suggest you get a nice set of components for the front and leave your cargo area empty. If you insist on getting subs, I'd leave the doors unlocked so at least they don't break anything when they take them this time.

haha, very funny...naw, i already have a JVC Arsenal head unit and all door speakers have been swapped out to the Pioneer REV series, so those are good 2 go...but after having that system for 2 years and not having it for about 3 1/2 months now, i want to get some more bass. but this brings up another idea...i think i would be happy with one really good 12 and use the rest of the space as storage...so i am thinking of making the "platform" as low as possible to keep it looking fairly stock, but mount the one 12 under it, possibly in a ported enclosure with the port facing the liftgate, as that produces the best output...so if ya have any more suggestions or ideas, lemme have 'em...

and whitey, do you know how these subs were mounted, as they look like with the carpet removed, they're just firing upwards...i was thinking along this line, but the top of the subs would not be exposed like these, as i want to be able to throw gear on top of it...

get a viper alarm system and a pull over cargo top. if anyone kicks a tire or keys my car the alarm goes off... i like it. lol

well, i didn't notice this before in your post, but they busted the quarter panel glass first, then the rear-passenger glass, then opened up the liftgate and drug it out. i know this is what happened b/c there are scrape marks on the plastic at the top of the quarter panel glass on the inside of the truck where they tried to pull it out and found out my box was way to big, then busted the door glass, unlocked all the doors, and opened the back and took my stuff...and outta all this, no fingerprints!!!

The subs are 4 6.5" drivers in a single sealed enclosure. He covered them with vented covers that do not hinder the sound.
If you wanted more sturdy protection for the subs, there are many places that sell those metal bars that act as sub grills.
