panic button makes remote starter/alarm install expensive?

I was thinking about getting a remote starter / alarm system for the truck. We went to price some out at the local stereo shop. At first it was about $500 installed. When they found out we had a panic button on the remote, the price went to $800 installed. Just because they have to bypass some crap.

Has anyone else run into this? Is it possible to rip out whatever controls the panic and door locks before hand to avoid the extra 300 bucks?

Thats total BS. I had a "panic button" and it works just fine. As long as you don't arm the system with the new alarm, and unlock it with the old remote, or key, you're all good. Take it to a Best Buy or Circuit ÅÅÅÅty, and they'll get it going.

The only thing that they might have to bypass is the chip in your key if you have one. $500 is not that bad of a price to have it done at a shop. I normally charge $350-$400 installed for my friends when I do it at home and the shop I work at would charge about $600-$650. The alarms that I normally use is the autopage 860 or the 725 with the 2way pager. And if your car has a chip in the key you would also need a dei 555uw that retails for about $50. I think its the 98 and up 4runner that have the chip in the key

I don't have a chip in my key. I deffinatly want an alarm with a 2-way remote, and hopefully something that won't annoy me and the rest of my naighbors. I havent really looked into the recent alarm technology yet. I just thought the extra 300 for having the panic button on the remote was absurd.

yeah, I've never heard about that?? That's crazy they want an extra $300 for that.

I know garrett1478 is running a Commando FM 870 alarm w/ remote start...even though currently, he doesn't have the remote start hooked up.

I know him and many others on this board are running the same alarm/remote start system and should be able to chime in w/ more info.

When I get ready to install an alarm/r.st., I'm going w/ the above mentioned system. One thing that's cool about this system is you can set the remote to roll your rear window down and up automatically. That in itself would be nice since the factory remote only lets you roll down the rear window.

son209 is right, the only thing they might have to bypass is if you have a chip in your key and even then it should be less than $100 more to do that too. For a simple remote like a viper 350 or similar you should be in the $200 range installed......$300 with remote start.....$400-500 with 2-way and remote start.

^straighten out your antenna and leave it expose to gain transmission. those 550esp used to be the shiet.

thats true. neatness when routing wire is the other half of the battle. in texas, average installation labor for your 4runner is about $150.

what unit are you looking at?

I'm pretty sure you can wire a aftermarket/remote start alarm to your factory alarm with no problem. The factory alarms runs off door triggers...so all you need to do hook up the unlock wire from the aftermarket alarm to the OEM Alarm Disarm Wire in your car....which by the way is a - powered Blue/Black wire located in a 18 pin connector in the Drivers side kick panel...I have done this in the past with other cars with no problem....Hope it helps

I love the 550ESP, best alarm I've installed yet (not a big fan of the 2-way stuff, the remote is too bulky to carry in my pocket since I carry remotes for both cars on the same keychain). Thanks for the tip, but I'll probably leave it as is because I can lock it from about 1/8 - 1/4 mi away now and I really don't feel like tearing the dash apart for that. Lame I know.
