OEM vs. aftermarket rear axle bearings...

My rear axle bearings need replacing on my 3rd gen 4runner. I just got quoted $605+taxes for both axle bearings from the dealership (these are only the bearings, no install, no seals, nothing else). So my question: What is your opinion of OEM ($605+) versus aftermarket ($180) rear axle bearings. I prefer to use OEM but am having a hard time getting over the price.

One of my friends suggested 555 (triple fives) as an option but I haven't priced them out yet. Any other suggestions for a good aftermarket rear axle bearing? I believe you get what you pay for, but $605 seems outrageous for two axle bearings. Is there any brand that is close to OEM without the crazy price?

Looking forward to your replys, Cheers.

$605 for 2 bearings, I hope they supply the lube and a comfy place to rest your elbows while you're bent over

This place has them from $46, SKF and Timken are both good brands.

Triple 5 is an OEM supplier for toyota. I would think they would work pretty good. Just remember you get what you pay for.

How many miles are on the old bearings?

Yes that is pretty much how I felt when they quoted me the price, hence my posting on yotatech.

I don't know if the previous owner had ever replaced the axle bearings, but something tells me they are the originals; my truck now has 158 000 miles on it. And I agree you get what you pay for, I just don't want to pay a ridiculous price ($605 for 2 axle bearings). Waiting on my supplier to get me a triple 5 price tomorrow. I am hard on my axles/drive train in general with four wheeling and pulling a very heavy trailer (4000+#s loaded), so I want good axle bearings, seals, oils, etc.

Cheers

Toyota uses KOYO bearings. The Toyota part number is 90363-40020. You can buy the same KOYO bearings from a KOYO dealer. The KOYO part number is 6308T.

I've run NAPA bearings in mine further than 158k.As a matter of fact the Toyota factory bearings outlasted that!

Thanks for your feed back. I ended up getting "NPN Bearings" (I am going by my invoice so NPN might stand for something), they were recommended as a good aftermarket brand by a guy who works at a yota dealership. $70/each bearing. Also got me Brembo rear brake shoes, the rest (seals inner/outer etc.) is Toyota OEM. Should all be completed by me, with help from my mechanic (he has a bearing press), on Friday.

Cheers
