Odd speedo question 1st gen (hello to all)

hey all,

I just purchased a 89 4runner not 5 days ago. (I used to be a jeeper, 87 XJ RIP) I've already run into a problem...tired swapin in a gauge cluster with the tach/volt/oil ... everything works fine except speedo needle is all over the place, works ok from o-25mph but around 34-40 it starts screeching and it won't go above 40 miles per hour. It worked fine and silently with the old cluster, so I don't know if it's the lube issue. thanks...also what is best gear ration for 22re and 31's. I've got 3.70's now and it's unbearable.

You don't have 3.70 gears. Toyota didn't make them for an 8" diff, the highest they made was 3.90 but only in 1981. You should have 4.10 gears like most everyone else unless it's an auto in which case you probably have 4.30's. In any case, 4.56's are generally considered about perfect for 31's w/manual transmission, 4.56 or 4.88's with auto.
