Newbie has a few transmission questions ???

New here. Well, first post but I’ve been lurking around a while.

SloPoke turned me on to this site. He said it was the best for information without flamation. From the tech. section and posts/replies I’ve read so far, I’m agreeing with him. Thanks SloPoke!!!!!

I’ve recently bought an 80 and the 4 speed tranny is REALLY sloppy. There’s a salvage yard down the street from my house that has a 86 parts truck (I've taken parts for my 88 from it already). I’m wondering if I can swap the tranny from the 86 22RE truck to my 80 20R truck.

Now to my questions...

Will it bolt up to the 20R??
If so, will it fit the tranny crossmember??
Any mounting mods needed??
Also, can I use my existing t-case or should I pick up the tranny and t-case from the salvage yard all together??

TIA for the advise.

April!

BTW: Ther 88 is my DD and I'm building the 80 for my trail rig. The 80 was set up for boggin so I know I'm going to have a FEW more questions.

Well frankly I have no Idea at all.... however.... I wanna say, "Hey, welcome to the board!!!" Iam pretty new here myself and have found so many reasons to stay. Although my wallet tends to be lighter every time I look here :pat:

Yes. The 20R and 22R's use the same bolt pattern from the engine to bellhousing.

No. The '86 tranny is about 4" longer then the one in your '80. That said, there are various means of either moving the crossmember or just adding a simple adapter plate to it so you can use the newer tranny.

Depending on which tranny it is (G52 w/carb, W56 w/EFI), you may run into issues of the tranny/transfer sticks hitting a bench seat. This may dictate the conversion to buckets and/or finding a different tranny. The G52 from a carbed truck will fit better since the sticks are further forward and most came with bench seats. There will also be driveshaft issues but you can simply pickup the the set from your '86 donor if it is the same bedlegth as your '80.
Also, can I use my existing t-case or should I pick up the tranny and t-case from the salvage yard all together??
Get the donor t-case as well.

Thanks toy283. You answered all my questions.

I don't have to worry about the bench seat, I already have buckets in the 80. I do know that I'm going to have some driveshaft issues. The bed on the donor truck is much longer. I hear I can get a custom drive shaft made for next to nothing. We shall see.

Thanks again,
