new member,tech question.

hey everyone,
im a new guy, glad to have stumbled across this site.

i have a 95 toyota truck with the 22re engine.
it has a 5spd and just over 97k miles.

heres my 2 questions/problems.

1.i have an intermitted problem with my heater blowing cold air.
it will warm up and blow hot air then it will start to fade off...and get just luke warm and finally turn to blowing cold air......then it will magicaly turn hot agian.
the temp gauge is always pretty consistent....around the middle or alittle past when in stop and go and right close to the cool line when crusing on the freeway.
it seems to turn cold at lower rpms (around stop and go) and then blow hot on the highway...but this is not always the case. can blow hot or cold anytime.

2.idle sometimes surges....i have no tach, but i assume the rpm's are dropping and rising. and when i let the clutch out from a stopsign or light it drives fine right away.
just the idle is surging sometimes.

those are my only two problems. i love my yoda otherwise.
any help would be great. thanks

First thing I would do is replace the thermostat and see if the problem is resolved.

Next, pull the glove box out, locate the big huge cylinder behind it for the heater, pull it out and clean it. Chances are you have a big rats nest worth of carpet fiber, dust and maybe even some animal hair. While you have the system opened, take your compressor and blow 100+ PSI through the vents from all entires and exits.

The surging idle could be so many things.
Your AFM is sticking
One of your fuel filters needs replaced, or both
Your throttle line is stretched and needs adjusting
IF you have Cruise Control, that line could be sticking and causing your problem.

Have you checked your coolant level lately? Low coolant will cause the sorts of problems that you describe with your heat, and really low coolant can cause surging because of the water temp sensor signal. I actually only have experience with the surging from the water temp sensor on the 7M's, but I suspect the 22re might do the same thing. Worth checking out anyway.

Yep sounds low on coolant. If the coolant is low, the idle passage in the throttle body will cause the idle speed to fluctuate.

thanks for the ideas guys.
i will check the coolant level asap. it should be at the top when i open the radiator cap right?
can i just add any kind into my exsisting coolant if its low?
when i purchesed the truck 6 mo ago i had all the fluids in the truck changed. so i know the coolant is fairly new.

thanks to you guys....it was infact low on coolant.
it took about HALF THE BIG SIZED JUG to get almost to the top of the radiator.
i think its a gallon size i got?
now the idle is not surging and the heat has stayed hot and not went cold.
you guys are true pros.
im suprised the truck did not run hot being down that low.
how would it have gotten so low.
i had all the fluids (including flush and fill) done 6 mo ago when i got the truck?

Id bet your water pump is leaking. Even if you are not seeing any fluid under the vehicle, id personally look at the underside of the water pump for a stain trailing out from a small hole beaneath the water pumps' pulley. This hole (aka the weep hole) is designed to allow coolant to escape and not cause water pump shaft bearing failure without warning.
