I threw a rod in my 96 4Runner due to water...total cost to repair was $2200. My insurrance covered me w/o question...it's worth asking. Just be honest so you dont get thrown in the clinker.
$1500 for 3.4L w/ 50k miles from www.car-part.com (online junkyard database)
$700 to do the swap

Ok i changed the oil and it sounds way better.(still sounds a little weird but I havnt driven it around yet so Im not sure) It's been sitting the last couple days, didnt want to drive it that way. The oil definately had some water in it but no shiny speckles. I didn't cut open the filter and its gone now. I still need to change the tranny fluid, it looks milky, so maybe i got some water in there too. Thanks for all the advice. Thats a great idea about the insurance but I only have liability coverage anyways. Ray

when you get a new engine.

I'm bettin' it's gonna make a full recovery. You have to suck up a rather significant quantity of water to do any serious harm. The engine doesn't hydro-lock from been stalled due to a little excess moisture, which it didn't even(so go figure, would likely have stalled the engine if it was SO much water as to hydro-lock). Go ahead and buy a new engine, I'm sure any "good" mechanic who needs work will agree.(Sarcasm)
Hydrolock
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In automotive terminology, a hydrolock is the immobilization of an engine's pistons by a liquid (usually water, hence the prefix "hydro-"). Hydrolocking occurs when liquid fills a cylinder on the intake stroke and, due to the incompressibility of a liquid, makes the compression stroke impossible. This, in turn, prevents the entire engine from turning, and can cause significant engine damage if one attempts to forcibly turn over or start the engine...

is it an automatic??? if so check the mounting of the flexplate to the torque converter, they make a sound like a rod knock if the bolts/nuts get loose. maybe the water messed with the loc-tite. neways, it's cheaper than a new engine.

Alrighty, flushed out the Transmission, The fluid looked like choc milk.(didnt smell burnt though and no metal flakes) just gotta do the differentials and T-case. Engine Still sounds just a little funny, but maybe it was like that before and I didn't notice. Ray

FYI, you should have pulled the spark plugs and turned it over before attempting to start it. Even if you turned it off while under water, you still got water in the intake which was sucked up once you fired it up.
