Need help with 97 Runner 5 Speed Trans removal
A friend of mine has a 97 Runner 3.4L 5 Speed 4WD and wanted to know if i can change the clutch..
I was wondering if anybody can give me the process of removing the transmission, as to what i need to take off to acess everything
If i can get that information, it would be very helpful...
Thanks

Really dude, Another damn thread on the same subject..?
You said (in your other thread ) you did a clutch on your truck.
Yeah its a different truck but its not that much different.
Pull slave cylinder, Pull shifter, Pull tranny Xmember, Pull both driveshafts..
Really, If youve done one you can do them all.
Now look at the damn FSM I posted (in the other thread ) and then go do the clutch.

ya i did do one on my 95, iv also done one my 89 tracker, both of them had plenty of space to move around it to get to nuts and bolts and whatever else.. but if u look at the 97, there is no space to get the top 2 nuts from the transmission to engine mounts.. so i just wanted to know if there are any ways to get around all the BS in the engine compartment to get to those to nuts...
everything sounds so easy to do when u put it how u put it, but yet theres more things u have to do before u do all the others.
also i did look at the FSM, and i also looked at the Haynes manual, but none of them went into not even a little detail as to what u need to do
so ill rephrase my question.. how do i get the top 2 nuts off of the transmission??

If you've done one clutch, you can do another. Start removing crap and I'm sure you'll figure a way to get 2 bolts out. I would guess pulling the cross member, slowly lowering it on a jack and when the trans starts pulling the motor back due to the jack being lowered, you should be able to use several long extensions and get the bolts out. I could be wrong because I've never swapped a clutch on a 97. However, I did install the tranny on a 95 with a 3.4

You can use flex joints and a breaker bar (hard way) or you can make it easy on yourself and go right through the passenger side wheel well and get to the top bolts (not nuts).
Be sure you save the order you pull the bolts from, there are 2 different sizes. If you are doing this by yourself have either 1) a tranny jack or 2) a regular jack, some straps/wood (to brace from inside the cab atop the tunnel) and a good brain to work it.
I did my 97' Runner and a 00' Taco clutches both by myself on my garage floor with the second method. Each took me about 7 hours working at my pace with music/beer. Very doable and although others put it a tad more abruptly, if you did your 95' you can EASILY do a 96+

ok kool.. the second way sounds pretty reasonable so ill try that first.. now are the 2 bolts on the very top of the trans? in the manual it say 4 bolts and 2 nuts.. so i was asuming they were nuts since i have the 4 bolts already out..
Also now that im thinking of it.. do i have to take the clutch cover plate (i think thats what its called) off? And if so, do u know how to get the bolt that is on the top drivers side? cuz i cant see how i would be able to get anything up there to grap the bolt
