Here's a link to a 5MGE swap.
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/supra/

Although the motor mounts are located at the same place on the 5M as the 22R, the bolt holes do not line up. I need to do a little fabricating on the motor mounts to be able to bolt the engine in, but the amount of work is minimal compared to what is needed for other engine swaps

The 5M bellhousing bolts to the truck transmission without any adapters.
A w56 tranmission that is I am not sure on the R150 or 151 transmissions though.

Sounds pretty drop in to me.
the 5MGE motors can be found in older supra's or cressida's.

Also if you can find a 6MGE which is basically the same as the 5MGE but has the 200hp power of the 7MGE. It was a kind of in between model engine.

Info on the 6MGE engine: 6MGE specs

You can get a 6MGE here: nippon motors

I think the best thing to do for this kind of swap is to either get the whole vehicle or get a jap spec front clip to scavage the parts off of. That way you have everything you will need.

I also found a: 7mgte motor swap into a 1988 4 runner

For example here's a 7mgte front clip on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

Out of these 2 swaps the 5/6MGE is going to the be the least expensive out of the two engine swaps.

Hey toy283-

Anyone elese is welcome to chime in also. Thanks

toy283, You seem to have a good handle on what fits, I'm looking at putting a 401 into my CJ, freeing up a very strong AMC 258 I-6. I have another 86 runner I bought for 250.00 it was going to be a parts truck but....would the 258 fit, do you have any info on anyone silly enough to do something like this. The 258 is a very long motor, I have asked AAdapters about it and I'm awaiting their reply. Do you have any info.
I would call it a JEETA.
Thanks in advance.

bzzt, wrong. the 3VZ-E is a sohc engine, it's improved sister the 3VZ-FE that was found in some camrys is dohc.

i think the chevy 3.1/3.4 would make a decent low-buck swap, if you don't mind fabricating mounts. narrower and lighter than the 4.3, pretty decent aftermarket available for it, and the engines are a dime a dozen. you can also bolt a toy tranny to it with no adapters(just a bellhousing and most likely pressure plate and clutch swap)

bzzt

yes sir you are correct, just commenting with out thinking, it has 2 cams but is a SOHC Engine, my appologies , if yer going to swap the most power would come from a 7M-GTE turbo inline six from Toyota Supra's 87 - 92 , that is where my money will be heading as soon as ti checks in with me first,,,

For "drop-in" engines, there are only two:
The original 3.0 (duh!)
3.4 V6 - require rewiring the computer etc.

After that, almost any engine can be put up front of your Toyota, the only ones I've never seen nor heard about are Ford big-blocks and 4.6 V8's. Engines I have seen or heard about (seen writeups at one time or another):
  • Chev small-block - got one myself
  • Ford small block - 289, 302, 351W
  • Chev big-block - not an easy fit by any means
  • Chev 4.3 V6 - one of the easiest non-Toyota swaps
  • Toyota 5M, 7M, 7MGTE - the now common Supra swap
  • Buick 231/3.8 - not the 3800 common in newer FWD cars but a RWD found in the 70's and early 80's
  • Saturn DOHC 1.9 - only one swap I know of but it's been done.
  • Rover 3.9 V8 - very common swap in Australia
  • Holden V8 - also very common in Australia, very similar to a SBC swap
  • Isuzu I-4 diesel - from a medium duty truck. Massive torque available
  • Chev 2.8 V6 - a waste of time if you ask me
  • Chev/Isuzu 3.1/3.3/3.4 V6 - a much improved 2.8 in every aspect
  • Buick 215 V8 - similar to a Rover swap but the engines are all 40 years old now
  • Chev LT1 - I list this separately because there are issues involved with this swap unlike a standard SBC
  • Supercharged Ford 3.8 V6 - good engines are very hard to find
  • Jeep/Chev 2.5 I4 - why? But I have seen it done.
  • Chev 6.2/6.5 diesel - very tight fit
Other swaps that I think have potential but you'd be the first to do (AFAIK):
  • Mercedes 300 I5 diesel - good torque/hp and a good length
  • Chev I5 (unsure of dispacement) - From a new Colorado
  • Chev 5.4 V8 - I "think" it is comparable to an LT1 swap but I'm not too familiar with the engine
  • Subaru WRX

someone stuffed a 6.5L turbo diesel in a yota?? Do you know, did they put a pre '94 6.5 in that had the mechanical injection pump? Good god talk about torque out the azz! 390ftlbs at 2800 and 190hp at 3300rpm!! After some work that will be well over 400 and 250! And with a regear (higher gears) 25mpg would be cake!

i really would like to do a 3.4 swap espeicaly with a supercharger...that would be a big boost in power.

How hard is the swap? If its just drop in id defintly just buy a motor and wiring harness and computer and wire it up myself...(im good at stuff like that)

also i have 4.56 gears...wow my truck would FLY to 100mph.

I don't think a 258 is gonna fit very well. You're right, it is one looong engine, longer than a Landcruiser F series which is nearly impossible to fit in anything but a '84-'88 body style and damn tight in there (also a waste of time/money IMO). I don't think the Jeep engine will fit anywhere but in the bed (I've done this with Chev big-blocks BTW).

Are the newer jeep 4.0 high output inline 6's shorter than the 258's? I know they're the same displacement. Just dreaming up a possible engine swap for some of us 3.0 trucks/runners. What I found out so far is that jeep used the Aisin manual transmission (Jeep code AX15) 5 speed with their 4.0 6 cyl., which happens to be the Toyota code R150/R151 5 speed trannys used with toyota 3.0 v6's and turbo 22RTE's! The only differences are the bellhousings and tailhousings! Sooooo - - if a v6 owner were to pull the engine, swap the bellhousing with the AX15's, and find a jeep 4.0 6 cylinder with a 5 speed (so you'd have the clutch), everything so far should bolt together (theoretically) right? Just looking for input to see if it's do-able. If so, it could mean a cheaper/easier engine swap option, with more power than the 5vz-fe! :bounce2: I hope I'm not getting all excited for nothing.
