Hey guys,
So I'll be moving this next week, and don't want to rent a U-haul just for my mattress. So, I'm thinking about strapping it to my surco roof rack. I have the ratcheting tie downs, so I know it should be secure.

My question is if the surco rack and roof-rails of the 4runner handle the possible air pressure against it. I could imagine the mattress/boxspring will really act like a wing and put a good amount of upward pressure on the surco rack.

I drove this mattress about 30 minutes, under 40mph and it was fine.

What about driving 4 hours ? I doubt I would be brave enough to go over 50 mph.

Thoughts?

rent the uhaul or find a friend with a Pick up.

I wouldnt drive 400 miles with a mattress on top of my rig. 100 bucks is cheaper than causing accidents.

U-haul seems so damn expensive...

Either you do a one way move, and it will cost $175. Then, I still need to get back to my truck somehow at my old house. I doubt anyone will want to drive my ass back 300 miles, so I'd have to fly.

Or I can do a two way move, but, then they charge you $0.99 per mile, and then that would come out to be about $400?

Am I just missing something, because that just seems like a ton of money.

ahh, i thought you had a hitch.

Im sure you can buy a hitch. With the box spring and mattress, I think you might run into some problems.

Okay, I'll call up U-haul tomorrow, see if they rent hitches, if not, then I'll go buy one and get a trailer.

i dont think they rent hitches, but they do install them after you buy them. do the trailer, youll feel safer. you might also need a drop ball mount you tall punk

Check with a junk yard or any trailer place.

uhaul sells them to you and puts them on no problem. assuming tis an actual uhaul place and not a gas station

I would search around in your area and find a hitch that isnt ginormous.

Why don't you just drive down to your new place in your Runner...rent a cheap pickup down there, drive up and get the mattress and box spring and then drive back down. A pickup should only cost about $40-$50 a day and mileage shouldn't matter, just gas. Or just buy a hitch and rent a trailer.

You can get a Hidden Hitch online for about $100, easy install.

the time and amt in gas wouldnt be worth doing all that. he is on a time line...so im guessing online is insufficient.

do it living on the edge is fun. Use a few ratchet straps loop them through the handles. We had a sheet of plywood and about 4 drunk college kids on a surco. Id do it.

if by living on the edge you mean having the potential of causing a huge accident.....

4 hours is a long time to by flying by the seat of your pants.

If we can haul a 4x8x 5x32 thick plywood on my moms old grand cherokee onthe factory roof rack then your rack can support a matress. I highl suggest you travel offroads though so you can drive slower.

I got a class 3 hitch for 45 bucks at a junck yard and the U pull sells them for 35 off the trucks and 25 on if you take it off around here.

You can buy a class 3 at walmart of all places, made by reese iirc.
