Locker Installation question!
Ok, I own a 1997 4Runner SR5 2WD, I will be upgrading to new Yukon 4.88 gears this week, at this time i can't afford to get a locker, but I would still like to get one in the future. My question is: Can a locker be added without the need of having to buy another master install kit? Do you have to do a whole new gear setup just to add a locker? Will the "backlash" adjustment setup have to be done again? I guess I could wait, but that is the thing i don't want ot wait until i can afford a locker to get the new gears in. Also, a local shop qouted me $250.00 for just installing the new gears, that is with me supplying: brand new gears, master install kit & the third member already out of the truck. Is that a fair price? I live in Souther Ca. Thanks!!

It depends on what locker you're talking about. An Arb or Detroit will need setup again. A lockright or Aussie wont need another setup. Pick your poison.
I won't go into pro's/ cons about either type, cause you can search for that.

Thank's scuba! Once I can afford one it will be a "lockright". So do you mean this is something I can do myself? The only reason I'm paying somebody else to do the gears for me is because you need special tools for the job that I dont have. Scuba, I know that in order to install a locker the "spider gears" have to come off, correct? and in order to do that, you have to removed the factory spool/ring pinnion unit, right? Will the backlash have to be redone? Thanks gain for your reply!!
