leaking from rear axle???
Before I get started, i DID do a search. I replaced my axle seal a couple of months ago. When i was changing my tires, i realized that there was something leaking (maybe leaking, could not find the source) from both rear tires. Now the thing is, could it just be the old stuff soaked in the brake pads? or is it new stuff. I changed my right rear axle seal but not my left. Any thoughts?

Both my rear axle seals went bad and my rear brake pads were soaked and I had them replaced when the seals were done and I bet the other seal is bad too and the side you replaced is the old stuff that collected.

SOB. This sucks! I replaced both wheel cylinders and they are not leaking. I took the drum off and poked the seals and nothing came out. I really hope the other one isnt leaking (in denial)

On the hose length, the important thing is that the hose runs upward all the way from the axle to the end. You want to avoid at all costs any "dips" in the breather hose as it runs away from the axle. Why? The hot air and oil mist that comes out of the vent can/will condense in the hose and is there are any dips in the line, the oil can pool there and block off the hose. It happened to me when I used to have my rear axle vent line running up to tee into the front vent line. Gear oil is pretty thick stuff, gets thicker the colder it gets. When mine plugged, I had two axle seals and the pinion seal go out until I found the problem. It took a fairly good puff on the vent hose to blow air through it. After re-routing the line to the rear, I've had no problems since.
