How difficult is a 3.4L swap to my 1988 3.0L?
My 1988 4Runner is all restored except for the engine.
I would like more HP and TQ but have not found much available for my 3.0
How difficult would it be to install a 3.4?

not too hard at all. do some searching for a company that makes a wiring harness for the swap b/c i know there is one. the motor mounts are supposed to be the same. the only problems you should encounter are the exhaust, fuel lines, etc, are on the opposite sides. also you'll need a 2" body lift to clear the height of the motor. make sure whatever tranny you have (auto, manual) you get an engine that was mated up to the same type of tranny. those are the only problems i've heard of that i can remember off the top of my head. i'll post more if i think of them later.

thought of one more thing. try to find a 3.4 out of a T100 so the sump on the oil pan will be on the same side to clear the front differential. if you don't, you'll have to use the oil pan off of your 3.0, and i'm not exactly sure how that's done but it can be done.
here's a link to that wiring harness i was telling you about. wiring harness . here's another article about a guy who did a similar swap: swap

I have an 88 4Runner, and I will be doing the swap probably next spring. Churnd mentioned basically all of the "trouble" areas that need to be worked out. I have a 3.4L engine that I am rebuilding right now, just have to find a tranny and marlin crawler T-case adapter so I can use my existing T-case from my runner. I will have to get custom fuel and power steering lines. As for the oil pan problem, I will be doing a SAS at the same time so no worries. Goodbye 22RE, hello 5VZFE balls.:tomcat:
