High Idle on Start (96 4Runner 3.4L)

Whenever I start my Truck it will idle at about 2000rpm until the temperature reaches the normal operating range. I could understand this if it was cold out as some type of cold start programing, but it is quite warm out.

Once it reaches normal operating temperature it will idle at a more normal 800rpm but sometimes it will idle at 1000-1100 and fluctuate between the two rapidly.

Any ideas what this might be?

This is normal operation for the 3.4 v6 from what I've heard. But the fluctuation you're speaking of may be another issue. It should rev up to about 2k RPM when you first start it, then after 10-15 seconds lower RPM's while you're still sitting in park. Anything after that could have to do with you remaining idle and having the A/C on. Try it with the A/C off and see if it still fluctuates. Good luck.

Could also be the IAC valve sticking or an O2 sensor on the way out.

I agree. Also, it might be a good time to pop off the TB and clean it up, if it's dirty.

I am having the same issue with my 96 3.4L, I cleaned the TB and IAC last night and now I idle around 1100 warm. I pushed on the little mechanism on the back side of the TB, just below the TPS and then WALLA! the idle dropped to 750. Not sure what I did, any advise would be greatly appreciated.
