Having problems checking timing....

I hooked everything up according to the Haynes manual, and the light just wont turn on. It turned on a couple times, but it would just flash once and then stop. I jumped the TE1 and E1 connecters, and hooked up the the lead from the timing light to the 1st plug wire. whats the deal?

Maybe the lights not working.
Is it the type that clamps over the spark plug wire? If so it may be have to be flipped around. My timing light clamp has a label on it that says "this side towards plug".

I guess it is the light, I dunno, it worked a couple times, just not cosistenly enough to do a reading. It is the type that connects to the spark plug wire, I could try flipin it though. I think it would be the same, but its worth a try. thanks!
