Gas Guage Problem

I have a 99 limited 4runner and am having problems with the gas guage. it is reading way off and i have almost run out of gas twice. i have had problems with gas mileage and will be replacing the 02 sensor as i have 105k on the original is why i have been relying on the guage due to fluctuating mileage 13 mpg and then 17 mpg. anyways, anyone ever have a problem with there guage sticking? been like this for a few tanks now. anything i can put in it to free it up?

FIRETEACHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I Have experienced this problem. , man I am excited that someone besides myself has come across this and live to tell about it!

Ok If you overfill the tank, I MEAN really overfill at the gas station, for example I used to leave the pump on its auto function and go inside the gas shop and buy a drink and come back and its stopped of course, and then slowly put say 3+ more gallons in the tank. then screw the gas cap back on tightly till it clicks several times.

OK I went on a trip last year with my race trailer behind me and I am in another state to go hit some trails on my ATV and my gas hand is at a 1/4 TANK! and it sputters and then I LOSE POWER. out of gas and I was 4+ hours from home.

Toyota told me They have never seen this problem, so I wasnt about to pay 500 bucks for a fix (DONT KNOW WHAT) that POSSIBLY could SAVE my gas hand meter.

I cant tell you how i thought i was alone in this matter. I look at my trip meter now constantly cause I just cant trust that gauge. Yes my milege looks like POOP right now as well and I am at 154k
