Gas gauge, its being worthless

well my gas gauge is acting up pretty bad. well i dont know if it really is the gauge but something related. after i fill my tank up, about 22 dollars and about 10 and a half gallons, i drive for maybe 2 or 3 days just about 4 or 5 miles each day and bam its already towards E. so im thinking there is a bad connection or a loose wire, something of that nature. anybody have a similar problem or a solution?

Sounds like a sending unit. Find the wire(s) leading to your sending unit and unplug the wire(s). Now ground the circuit. Your gas gauge should go full (or empty depending on the circuit). Generally speaking, if your gauge is capable of making a full sweep, then your looking at wiring or a sending unit. I'd put money on the sending unit. Over time gasoline can corrode and/or deteriorate the conducting surfaces of the sending unit.

One other thing comes to mind... How is your gas tank? Have you smashed it into anything recently? Hearing any weird noises coming from it?

fuel tank sending unit.

My sending unit went about 2 years ago. I got one new for $145 from the dealer. I installed it by myself, it would help to have another set of hands when removing and when installing the tank! NOT a fun task, if you do need to replace it buy a new one, for what a used one will run you and the odds that its in the same shape as your current one why waste the time! Just my .02!~
