Fuel smell

I have been getting a strong gas smell from my tacoma lately. Only happens when tank is full. Can't find any leaks. ?

Have you been topping off the tank lately?

Good question Ryan. Also, make sure the line to your EVAP "can" is on. If that gets disconnected it will make the engine compartment smell like fuel.

Are you smelling this in the cab, or with the hood open, or both? Any recent work?

Seeing as though this only happens at fill up, I would say most likely causes are overfilling (stop when the nozzle clicks off, otherwise damage may occure to your evap system) or posable seals on the top of the gas tank.

I would be very surprised if you DON'T have a CEL already. If you're pulling OBD II codes P0440 P0441 P0442 then I suggest only filling up to half a tank each time until the code goes away. Then you can fill it up all the way but DO NOT TOP OFF.

If you're using a shoddy 3rd party gas cap, I would recommend a genuine Toyota one. All else fails and you're still throwing CEL codes, you might have to replace your evaporator filter.

I don't have a CEL. I smell the fuel outside of the cab, not inside. I will check the evap can, but it could be seals on top of the tank? Are these seals replaceable? Easy?

My 97 BMW recently started doing the samething so I'd be interested in the fix. Only after filling up and it lasts until the car is driven for 20-30 miles. I never top off, but I always fill up untill it clicks off.

Sorry to revive a really old thread, but this is the closest thing Icould ffind tomy issue . TheiI have recently purchased a 97 reg cab Tacoma with the 2.7, it has188k and eevery time I get on it, the cab starts to smell like raw gas. I have seen others saying it couldbe a injector/o ring . Some saying the ccharcoal cannister. It starts fine, I think, it doesn't immediately. Crank withthe turn of a key , but I never have to sit there and continue turning the key toget it to crank . Anyway to narrow or figure out what wwhat the problem could be? Thanks for all responses
