Fuel Level Guage

A colleague asked me if I would be replacing the fuel level sending unit when I replace the fuel pump. He said it is about a $17 part, but didn't know if it was a problem in Toyotas like it is in some vehicle types.

Is this something I should replace while I am in there?

Thanks,

-Scott

scott,

are you replacing your fuel pump on your 97? and are you asking if the fuel sending level unit needs replacing? and are you asking if there are other parts that need replacing besides the FSLU? just want to make sure b/f answering the question. i might be able to pull up a diagram for you but it will be out of my 98 which should be identical to your 97.

Why are you replacing the fuel pump on a '97? Preventive maintenance? As far as the sending unit, I've seen 1 or 2 posts over the years about sending units going bad (not including the TSB on the 3rd gens with the out-of-cal units). But if it's $17 like your buddy said (I've heard they're about $140 from the stealership), then go for it!

Hi Bob,

The idea to replace the float that measures how much fuel you have in your tank and sends that information to the dashboard instrument gauge was brought up today. Since I am already in the fuel tank, would it be a good idea to replace that float, or whatever the device is that measures fuel level.

Thanks for your interest!

Thanks guys.

I am installing the URD Fuel Upgrade Kit. Part of the kit is a higher capacity fuel pump.

Bob, thanks for the offer. I think I'll leave it alone.
