Flowmaster 52557 and high flow cat with 2.5 inch exhaust on 3rd Gen
Hello,
I read alot of about what people are putting in their 3rd generations before I ordered my muffler.
I run Flowmasters in my Camaro but was concerned about running one in my 1997 3.4 liter 5 Speed Runner.
I did not want it to be too loud or sound 'fast and the furious'ish'
I knew I was going with a 2.5 inch exhaust, new high flow cat, which was to replace my 2.5 inch Dynomax super turbo and high flow cat.
I did not want to go with the 2.25 inch Flowmaster which is the 52457 that some guys on here are running. I may eventually go with a supercharger so thought I should free it up, I also, based on my experience of building cars for various types of racing, I am certain I will not lose any bottom end or mid range performance.
So last Friday I went to my friends exhaust shop..we cut out the old, bent up new pipe and laid some sickly perfect welds on the whole system, all new hangers etc, the exhaust is so tight to the body and is ideal for clearance, we dumped the exhaust out the side, behind the right rear tire, no tip or anything, I painted the exhaust with high heat black VHT.
I was nervous on the first start up thinking, I was going to have to cut it out and swap a quieter muffler back in....was I ever wrong!!!!
It sounds sick, perfect tone not too loud, quieter than my Dynomax at idle and low RPMs and about the same throughout the power band but has a much better muscle car type tone, not all farty like an import.
I am very happy with the exhaust and would recommend a Flowmaster 50 series to anyone who wants a good exhaust. I would be happy to meet up with anyone in the area, who would want to check out how the system looks and sounds before having theirs done somewhere.

I too have a 50-Series 2.5" in my 2nd gen, and love it. Great sound, NO in-cab reverberation, great overall muffler.
I think the Flowmaster is overlooked too many times for people looking at the "straight-thru" designs, which end up poppy and just wierd sounding IMO.

I have a 50 series stainless steel 2.25" Flowmaster (Part No. 842451) on my '92. I WAS worried about losing low end torque if I went to the 2.5" version but who knows if it really makes a difference. I got the stainless one after the last 50 series I had rusted apart at the weld where the tail pipe clamps on. I actually think its too quiet with the tail pipe on! If I run it without the tail pipe it sounds great but I'm a little concerned about getting CO into the truck without the tail pipe on. Right now, my driver's side header is starting to leak so that's all I can hear. 3.slow=3.slow no matter how you look at it but it definately sounds like there is more under the hood with a Flowmaster .

What about your CEL? Has it come back on since you replaced the cat? If it does, please post a new thread and let us know. We're ALL interested.

Flowmaster
I've been scouring all the forums re: mufflers and finally decided to get a flowmaster 50 stainless for my '01. It should be on by the end of the week so I'll know then what it sounds like.
