First post on forum. Need advice on why I have no heat at idle?
After checking the web, this seems to be the best Toyota forum.
Maybe someone can offer some advice.
My 88 4Runner (V-6) will not blow any heat in the cab at idle.
As soon as the revs come up I can hear the coolant gurgle and heat appears. Highway speeds produce great heat.
Stop and idle, and the air turns cold. Any thoughts?
I flushed the rad. No better.
I flushed the heater core with the garden hose. No better.
I filled the rad with new antifreeze and water. No better.
Winter is here in Northern Alberta, and I need to fix this problem.
Thank you to all who reply.

I had the same exact problem just a month or so ago. It required switching the thermostat with a new one. You will also need to get a new gasket to go along with it. Total caost wa about $35.00. Go with a Toyota original replacement one. If you have any other questions shoot me an email or PM. I tore my thermostat housing apart so many times I can get the thermostat changed in about 15-20 minutes now.

I had a similar problem, although I'm not sure my fix will apply to your problem. After getting my engine back in and tuning it, I had no heat. What had happened to me was the temp select cable inside the engine bay had come off of the water valve. I'm not sure if there's supposed to be some sort of retainer, but I don't have one. This is located (on my '91 22RE) on the firewall, driver's side.
My 2 cents worth.

If the t/stat does not work, you may have 1 of 2 possabilities.
Your temp control valve is restricted or your heater core is. I suspect your heater core due to the noise you are getting, since certiain rows within the core may be plugged, air gets trapped and the noise is either from that or just lack of volumn capabilities.
I see it quite often on chevs..
