is this fair?

so long story short: they did not give me the servicing of the MAF for free at the dealer despite my having purchased an extended warranty.

so i spoke to toyota extra care etc, and got back about 281 of the 400 dollar bill, leaving about 120 bucks that i need to be paid back (this is due to an extra 1.5 hrs of labor theyd charged me above what extra care calls 'normal' labor time).

so i finaly spoke with the service manager again about the outstanding bill and he wants to cut me a deal: since my 60K mile checkup is coming up, he wants to give it to me at half price -- he claims it is about $400.

that would be a definite good deal for me if that is the case.

so my question is: is the 60K mile checkup 400 bucks, what does it consist of, and is this fair?

Haven't done a 60K service at Toyota yet, but $400 sounds like what they will charge you. SOmebody with a 3rd Gen that has done 60K, let us know.

According to the Toyota Service Manual in the link:

So, you ~actually~ get an oil change, a coolant change, air filter change, tire rotation, grease drive shaft and re-torque driveshaft bolts... That's all they actually DO....

Oil Change = $20 all day every day and includes greasing the drivetrain and suspension components PLUS checking all fluids such as brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, etc...

Coolant Change = MAYBE $75 including all materials, labor, and disposal fees.

Air Filter Change = $20 and NO LABOR - it's a drop in filter, do it yourself.

Tire Rotation = You actually pay for that? Go to any tire store and pay $40 for LIFETIME rotate and balance and never pay for it again.

Re-torque driveshaft bolts = ???WTF??? All i have to say to that is "WHY?"

Total ~should~ be NO MORE THAN = $155 and that's with the LIFETIME rotation and balance. $400, my ASS. They're trying to rip you a new one!

If they want to charge you $400, make them include a Transmission FLUSH, plus change out the front dif fluid, rear diff fluid, xf case fluid, new platinum NGK spark plugs and clean the intake plenum and injectors with a BG44K service pack. Personally, I've done it ALL myself - by myself - in my garage with a ratchet set and some minor tools.

Let them list what they do on the 60K service. I would expect them to replace some belts on it and probably some other stuff.

My 30K on my 98 Tacoma was $200 (- air filter). That included a loaner car for the day. The 30K is essentially the same as the 60K, which is why I mention it.

They found a leaky water pump and replaced it under warranty, which would be the only real benefit in my eyes.

Burglars.

i called the service manager back and he will include a trans flush.

keep in mind, its $120 that i need back here. if its worth anywhere over 120 (bamachem said 155!), then ill take it.

Well if it is a genuine flush with all the fluid included, that isn't too bad. Do you need a flush?

But you said they weren't GIVING the service to you for FREE, you said for HALF PRICE. If they say they charge $400 and you get it for half price, then you have to pay $200 in addition to the $120 they already have that they OWE YOU. If the "service" is only worth $275 ($155 + $120 = $275) including the transmission FLUSH, then you're paying $320 for $275 worth of "services". In my opinion, you're still getting screwed. Have you ever changed your diffs and transfer case fluids? If not, then you're overdue for it. If they will include changing the fluid in the front and rear diffs along with the transfer case, then you'll break even and it won't be a deal at all - you'll just be getting what you pay for. Since they screwed you in the first place and are now dicking you around, they should throw in new platinum plugs for free.

I know, the point is supposed to do. Dealers tend to add stuff to the recommended list. Now would just be a good time to use it against them.

Tranny flushes are pretty expensive, so thats good.

And as we all know dealers tend to overcharge for services delivered.

But I agree they were wrong in the first place so push for everything you can get.

don't ask him. tell him what you want done and tell him you'll pay $200 for it. if he says no, then tell him to refund your $120 and you'll take your business somewhere else.

Just get your money back and worry about he 60k service later. $400 sounds a little steep to me.

i paid $440 for a 15k service! on my thread about it, someone said "if you even have to ask 'is this fair?' then the answer is no" ...

seems like the best thing we can do is go back, get them to explain their actions/charges, then go from there and don't leave until you get what you want. kind of like a hostage situation, without the violence, and with some of the roles turned around.

Why is the MAF sensor not covered by the 5-year, 60k mile warranty? The MAF is part of the engine, which is part of the drivetrain. Sounds like BS to me.

Spending some time under your truck goes a long way. You learn what makes it tick, you can grease all of the fittings yourself, and you can see if something is amiss. Giving $400 to a dealer because your 4Runner has made it to the 60,000 mile mark is a waste in my opinion. If you keep up with regular maintenance, air filter, oil & filter changes, chassis lubrication, etc, there should be no reason to piss away money like that. After a few disappointing initial visits to a dealer for minor things, I said forget it, and have not gone back. I am very pleased with my truck, and I service it properly on regular occasions. Its at 74,000 miles now and runs like new.
Just my opinion, but I truly think that these 30,000 mile and "big one" 60,000 mile checkups are nothing but a pure money maker for the dealer. If you drove a Skoda, or Lada, I would understand. Check the post that 4Route started the other day...
