Dead Runner - sell for parts or sell as-is?
My mother-in-law blew the head gasket on her 1994 SR5 4Runner. She was looking to sell and replace it anyway, but now she's in more of a hurry. I don't know much about options for selling a non-running Runner. It was pretty nice when it ran, and the damage may not be too extensive. We haven't had the engine cracked open yet to see if it needs a short block or just some minor repairs. It's a 94, 5 Speed, power windows/locks, cruise, moonroof, premium wheels. A parts dismantler quoted $500 to 1500 over the phone. Does that sound right? Would it be better to sell the whole thing outright or try to part it out? Kind of at a loss here and want to make sure she gets as much out of this as she can. Thanks!

if its in good condition... buy a used 3.0 from the junkyard... then sell it as a running 4Runner... you can at least get $4000 for one, 4000 it will sell QUICK. I paid $5500 for my 94 4Runner with leather seats (blue book is $6700).
22RE can go for about free-$1000
3.0 can go for about $500-$1200
To be honest I don't think there is a "big" market for used 4Runer parts. I say buy a decent used engine, drive it for a month or so to check out and see if the engine is up to par, then sell it for blue book.

I think Toyota has pretty much completed all the free HG repairs the are going to do, but it'd be free to call & make sure, they might still fix it for free.
If they don't & you decide to part it yourself beware. It turns into a huge project, from what I've seen here. If the wheels & seats are in really good shape you are probably past the $500 mark with just those two things. I bet you'd make more $$$ parting it yourself, but you might want to scan some of the parting threads here to see how big of a project it can become.
If the rig is as nice as it sounds it'd be a shame to part it out, maybe someone else in the family would buy it for $1000 and then fix/drop a new motor in it?
