My 5.29s arrived this weekend and I was wondering what kind of cost I can expect to pay if I drop off the truck and have them done. I don't have the time or energy to do any of the work right now, so I'd rather pay and get it done. I am having front and rear 5.29s with master install kits and a Truetrac LSD put in at the same time. Can you guys tell me what you paid in labor for gearing? I'd like to have some idea when I call around the next few days to make an appointment. Thanks !

I just put in one today in a Chevy Blazer for the rear and it cost $380 not including the parts.

Just to update this. I found a local machine shop in town that has done lots of ford/chevy gear installs. They told me to install front, rear and limited slip will be $600 labor, and they will need the truck for 3 days. That's not a bad price IMO so I made the appointment

Unfortunately, they can't get my in until October 10th which seems like a long ways off!

that's a little high.

it should be about $200 for the rear and about $250 for the front.

3 days seems like a little long, but they can prob have it done in 2 without any problems....

They are the only well known machine shop where I live that has experience doing this sort of thing though. A few of the other shops came in around $500 but have little to no experience changing gears. I'm willing to pay the extra $100 to a shop that can do it right, has the experience and to have the peace of mind that it's done right.

3 days did seem a bit long. I was hoping for 2 at the most. Guess my wife will get to drive me to work that week

for a drive-in job, 300 each for the labor is pretty standard. Half that if you pull the 3rds out and carry them in.

That's not bad for front and back... I was quoted $550 just for the rear (damn 2WD). However, this is for the whole thing... all parts included. So I don't know what the labor cost would be since it's all inclusive.

Wow. This sucks. I dropped the truck off this morning under the impression of $600 to drive it in, have the gears, LSD and master rebuild kits installed. They just called me and told me that $600 was if I brought in the carriers themselves!!! They want $1120 + tax to for a drop off and pick up install.

Screw that. I guess I will find someplace else to do it. That's just rediculous compared to what you guys have paid.

some shops just charge an arm and a leg. When I re-geared my heep, I can't believe what I paid and that was just for new gears, no locker. I believe it was close to $1500. You live you learn. Man I was pissed at that bill.

i paid $150 per diff to drop them off and and set up the gears/lockers. i did the thrid/diff install myself after they were set up. that also includes a $50 tip for the guy who did the front cause the place i got the gears from sent the wrong front set the first time so it had to be done twice.

$200 for the rear (it's very easy to pull and replace) and $300 for the front (pain in the butt by yourself) would be fair and typical.

$1120 is stupid-rediculous.

by the way, chevy's and jeeps are more cause you can't remove the third member like you can on a toyota....

I just found another shop in town that has done a lot of regearing to Dirt track race cars. They told me "Roughly $500 to drive it in and pick it up". That's a hell of a lot better. I told them I'd be a bit flexible on the price if needed. So now it's scheduled for next Monday and they said it will take 2 days. I'll update this when the time comes.

Time for an update...

I dropped the truck off at the shop (Shop X) on Friday October 21st. The quote was $500 to install front and rear gears, and my rear LSD. It was to be ready on the following Tuesday.

Tuesday rolls around, I call on the truck. They said they are having some troubles getting it finished and will need a few more days. Call back Thursday.

Thursday rolls around, I call again. They are still having some issues, but I get no details of the problems. Call on Monday it should be done.

Monday is finally here. I get a call from a completely different shop (Shop Y), saying my truck will be done tonight. Apparently the shop I dropped it off and was quoted from couldn't do the work, so without telling me they took it to another shop to have the work done. They took it to the place that quoted me $1200. So I call the original shop and say what happened? Why did you take it somewhere else? What happens to my quote?

They said they weren't comfortable doing the work and don't owe them any money.. I just have to pay the other shop they took it to the installation charge!! What a bunch of ลลลล! Now, without me even being notified, my installation cost has doubled and I'm not sure there's a damn thing I can do. Talk about being pissed off!

That is the craziest thing I've ever heard!!! They sub contract it out they should get to pay who they hired, you pay them what they quoted. Do you have any sort of quote in writing?

Theres proabably something you could do, it would proabably involve a lawyer, but unless you could get more than what you lost out of it it proabably wouldn't be worth it. Be sure never to go back and tell everyone you know how bad the place is.

I got a question as well thats similar....what would I be looking at $wise for a True Trac install in the front diff, if I took it out/if I dropped off the truck. I am thinking about doing that because its cheaper than an ARB and it allows me to steer better than a locker. I would proabably go for an ARB in the rear later. I asked in another thread but I forgot which one it was, anybody run an air locker of their masterflow compressor? Jw.

Personally, If I ever need gears or a locker installed & decide not to do it myself I'm sending them to YT member Zuc to do. Never heard anything but good stuff about him or his work.

Drive in/Drive out regearing costs versus two diffs on the bench is comparing apples to steak.

Around here, good Toyota specialist shops charge between 3 and 6 for an ARB diff on the bench. Expect another 3 to 6 for the rear to have it pulled.

IFS fronts are a whole nother deal.

Seems like there is a thread griping about cost, adding bad information and ending with no one getting anything done at least once a week.
