Clicking / Rattling Sound?

On my 3.0 I have a new clicking/rattling sound. At first I thought it might be a loose heat sheild somewhere but on closer inspection it sounds like it is coming from the drivers side under the valve cover. When I let off the gas and coast down a hill with the truck in gear it makes a steady loud ticking sound. It is very hard to describe the sound but it happens any time the motor is decelerating. It sounds like a piece of metal vibrating (like a heat sheild) but I think it is a little more serious than that. Does anyone have any idea's on what this is? I had the motor rebuilt about 6 months ago, it was burning about a gallon of water every 35 miles(almost as much water as gas yota tuff). I have changed the oil twice since the rebuild and both times their was only about 2 quarts left in the motor. I don't think it was using 3 quarts of oil before. I also just changed the cat and there seemed to be an excesive amount of black build up in the exaust. And the last thing is the check engine lite comes on, stays on for a few days, turns off, few days later comes back on. There is a 40,000 mile warranty on the rebuild, looks like I may need to use it. Any help or Idea's?

I'm going to head down to toyota dealership to check the codes asap. It doesn't sound or feel like a back fire, but I should have the timming checked. It didn't seem to have much more power after the rebuild it just ran a WHOLE lot smoother.

are you putting in any oil in between changes? i dont' know how much oil your suppose to have, i think its just under 5 quarts for the 3.0, not sure but if your only getting 2 quarts of oil when your draining it, and burning 3 quarts, you need to be putting more oil in. could be a lot of things inside the engine if its running with a low amount of lubrication on the inside of it.

I feel kind of stupid. The rattling sound that sounded like a loose heat sheild, was a loose heat sheild. I should have checked a little closer. It was missing a nut on one of the heat sheild. The check engine lite was a bad O2 sensor, I learned how to check the code myself and didn't have to pay $25.00 for the toyota dealer to check it. I bought an aftermarket O2 sensor from Autozone for 55.00, I probably should have gone with an original but money was getting a little tight. It seems to be working fine now we'll see if it last. Well just wanted to give you guys an update and let you know everything worked out. Thanks for the help.
