"Black box" in the cab?

Does anyone know what the "black box" that is mounted on the back wall of my double cab is? It is some kind of controll unit. It is mounted behind the driver's side back seat, right against the back wall. It is an ECU of some kind, I just wanted to know what it controlls. I hope this is enough of a description.

Thanks

Hhhhmm...the Taco the dealership loaned me the day before I bought mine had it as well. I checked mine and it doesn't have it. Now I'm curious as to what it is as well (and what I'm missing!).

Anyone know?

I was talking to someone and they told me it is part of the towing package. Makes sense since I don't have the factory hidden hitch on mine either.

Is it an external amplifier for the radio?

Ah! I was just digging through my new manuals and I think I've found your box... Is it the one shown as "Converter" in this scan? If so, it is the converter that combines all of the different signal lights on the truck into a simpler feed that works with single bulb/dual element trailer lights... your typical boat trailer set-up.

Great, this leads me to another question though. I had my trailer hitch installed after I bought the truck. Did the dealer put this "converter" in when the did the hitch, or do I have some kind of factory towing package? If so, why didn't it come with a trailer hitch? What other stuff does the towing package include?

Tomus, I just dont know... My '03 Taco has "9F" on window sticker as a $500 Class IV tow package. I have no idea if the converter is factory installed on ALL trucks with or without the actual hitch... Maybe you can tell by looking around the box or at its mounting bolts. Does it look like someone has put a wrench in there lately? Or drilled a hole or two? A few metal shavings or a small scratch? Anything that would indicate work done in that area?

The important thing is that you DO have the box. It's nearly impossible to hook a trailer up to one of these trucks correctly without it.
