Hello all,

My drive belts have been extremely noisy recently, and especially squeeky when I turn the AC on. The belts do not look worn so I just gave them a good tightening. Unfortunately now everytime I turn the AC it blows the AC fuse under the hood (replaced twice) and squeels and makes the most horrendous Apocalypse Now noises you've ever heard.

Has anyone else had this problem? I guess I'm gonna have to purchase 3 new drive belts from the Toyota place, but will this alleviate my AC fuse problem?

is the ac compressor seized? and when the pulley engages when you turn on the ac, the pulley no longer moves, causing that horrible sound.

had that problem on an old ford. maybe see if thats the problem.

start the vehicle, with AC off, go look at the belts and pulleys, and then have someone turn on the ac and see what happens.

Thanks for your reply. That's exactly what it is doing.

I took it to a mechanic to give it a look over and he said I need a new compressor and since he's down there, he'd recommend replacing the dryer since it's an 8 year old vehicle.

Ouch. For the time being he removed the ac belt and the 4runner is as quiet as a bird. Just no ac

cool, glad i could help.

thats a huge price tag.

see if you can get a compressor from someone who is parting out here on the forums. or maybe do alot of the work yourself (you would have to take it to an ac shop to get it recharged, etc.)

Yeah, my heart sunk when i heard that price. Almost makes me want to tough it out till cool weather and fix it next year (lol). I'm gonna attempt it myself.

Hey dumb question, but how can I tell which compressor I need? I'm looking on ebay and most of them say, for example, "Will fit 96-97 SR5, 98-02 limited", etc. Is it that specific, or am I safe just picking up one that is for a 3.4l V6 96-02?
