I know this topic has been beaten to death, but after doing a quick search, I would to hear responses from people who regeared to 4.56's or 4.88's with the 3.4L auto tranny, so here's my situation:

Current tires: 265/75/16 came with stock 225/75's
Current Gears: 3.90's

Goal tires: 33 Muds
Goal Gears: 4.56's

Does that sound logical? The gear ratio. Reason I ask is because I'm not sure either to go with 4.88's and 4.56's.

And reason I am regearing is because the loss of power is killing me, and more importantly, the gas mileage is killing my wallet. I know some say that regearing won't help your gas mileage. But I'm thinking that with the regain of power, I won't have to punch it as much just to keep up with traffic. What do you guys think? Gracias mucho

I honestly don't think its going to make that much difference money wise at the pump. maybe a buck, buck and half per tank if your lucky.

but you do need to regear, to gain power again ... I'm going with 4.88s

Not the 3.4 but this will give you an idea.
Gears prior to swap 4.10
Tires were and still are 35's
Auto Trans with the 3.0

Swapped in 5.29's

Miles per tank of gas before: 100
Miles per tank of gas after: 150

Now I would imagine that re-gearing just proved itself right there.

i'm in the same situation. i have 265/75/16s and am going get 33s and regear real soon. i'm considering 4.56s and 4.88s. i'm probably going to go with 4.88s tho because those are still a reasonable size to go to but they offer edge in power over 4.56s.

i have a question too about regearing... where do you buy gears? i figured i'll just buy them from the shop that does the work, but maybe it's better to buy online? and any particular brand that's recommended? seems yukon and precision are the gears of choice for the shops i called.

I plan on going with Yukon's, as for places to buy, I was iffy on that too. I've had a few people tell me to go with Randy's cuz nobody can beat their price, but of course we all know of the experience keisur had with them. I'm open to other suggestinos as well.

edit: Did you go with the precision gears? Cuz it seems like that's the only type they sell. And if you could tell your dear friend how much the total was with gears and the arb locker. If you dont' want to post it, you can pm me. -_-

everyone I talked to tells me something different .. some say yukon, some say precision .. and everyone says that the other one uses cheap metal from India .. so I just decided to hell with it, I'm just going to do Yukon gears.

My locker install cost was a little higher, b/c I did the OBA set up.

OBA/Compressor: $550+
Locker: $650
Install: $300

In about 2 months I'm going to do the front locker and regear then

gears will run you about $150/axle
Master install kit $110/axle
Bearings (not sure if you need these): $40
Labor: $250-300 for rear axle
$300+ for front axle

On the gearing guide on 4wheelparts.com it says 4.56 or 4.88 gears on a DD with 35s on. Ive always been told to go 5.29 with 35 inches? Is that chart accurate?

The math is easy. Old ratio x new tire size / old tire size. Then it's always a good idea to go with the lower ratio (higher numerically) because of increased losses due to extra rolling resistance, lost leverage (turning larger tires) and increased wind resistance from frontal area increase. Example: 4.10 x 35 / 28 = 512, so go with 5.29. In your case 3.90 x 33 / 28 = 4.59, so go with 4.88. You won't regret it.

Gears are ordered!!! I was just pricing around, and first place I called was Randy's, the guy I talked to was really nice, and the quote he gave me was 645. I was like hmm.....ok, then he said that there was a special but only for 95 toys and below, but he said for only today, he'll give me that special for 499!!! So I had to make a quick decision, and basically I ended up going with him.

I ordered 4.88's, but then I was thinking oh crap, I'm still gonna have my 265/75's on, so should I wait till I get 33's, or should I change the order???? Because I didn't want to get killed in gas

So surprisingly he had called me to tell me he stopped the order because he wasn't sure of my housing. Cuz stock 4.88's come with a weaker housing or whatever. So then I asked him about the 4.56's, and he said that they didn't have 4.56's for the front 7.5" reverse ifs. I was like hmmm......then we checked the rpm calculator or whatever, and the rpm's around 60 mph is only a couple hundred difference. I think I can live with that.

So in the end, 4.88's are ordered and on the way!! Install will be in about 3 weeks!!!

I also had a good experience with Randy's. I ordered the internet special... $389 for master install set with 5.29 Yukons (Yukons are made by US Gear, btw) on Thrusday. I had them direct shipped to the guy doing my gears. They arrived the next Monday. That's damn quick if you ask me. I also like their hours. I called them at 8am my time - their hours are 5am - 5pm PST.

wait, 389 including gears??? I didn't know you had 5.29's cebby, I thought you still had the stock 4.88's that came with your rig. Yea I like their time as well, calling at 7pm here is only 4 pm there. Good stuff!!

I guess Randy's is just not good with putting stuff together (Keisur's experience). But I'm hoping they'll be good with shipping parts. Only time will tell....
