Airbag light on after install

Just installed a new cd player on my 03' Tacoma. I had the door panels off working on installing some new speakers when I had to run to the hardware store to get something. I noticed that my airbag light was on. All wires were soldeder and taped properly during the stereo install. What could I have done during install to make the light come on? thanks

I had a '99 Tacoma with the same problem. Not sure about the '03, but my '99 had an airbag control unit attached to the floorboard behind the dash area just in front of the shifter cover. It can be identified by the yellow wire harness plugging into it. One of the plugs was partially disconnected somehow while hooking up the new stereo.

Word of caution -- any time you start messing with airbag stuff disconnect the battery and wait a couple of minutes for the system to completely discharge before touching anything. Having one of those bad boys go off in your face can ruin your day. Hope this helps...

Dunno the exact problem.. maybe you blew a fuse somewhere. Could be something as simple as that. Try disconnecting your battery for a minute and reconnect. See if it goes away after that.

I disconnected an reconnected my battery several times during the radio install. Could that have caused it?

Might have thrown a code.. take it up to your local auto store and have them check. Did you try what bulldog said, sounds like it could be the problem as well. If it is, disconnect the battery first then reconnect the plug.

taking out a battery will not cause the airbag light to come on. That would just be silly.

The only way to clear the light at this point, is to have it cleared either at the dealer, or by someone who knows how to clear the code. Yes, there is a very specific way to do it, and disconnecting the battery won't work. Something obviously cause the light to come on, so check all your connections and make sure you didn't unplug or jostle anything.

Working in a wrecking yard I have only had an airbag go off on me once, and thankfully it was on the opposite side of the car that I was working on. It still was not a fun experience.

When I turn the airbag off the light doesn't come on. Im assuming something was jarred loose when the stereo was put in so I have to check that. If there isn't power going to the switch will that cause the airbag light to remain on?

Mods please delete this thread so my reputation isn't ruined. The problem is fixed. I forgot to plug the "on off" switch back in.

Lol we aren't going to delete the thread, but this will serve as a good thread for people to troubleshoot problems. They will know that simply disconnecting the battery won't fix the problem

I have made many more silly mistakes than that, some that cost me $$$

sounds like me and the many other people who go to install a radio and when they are done realize the clock doesn't work only coming to find out Toyota made a pointless plug-in that does nothing and fits the clock plug. WELL, it's not the right plug-in Glad you got everything working jminz

I'll join you in reputation destruction, if any - I knew the answer to this from the title of the thread and the word "radio".

There must be a reason this sprang to mind so quickly? Been there, done that - more than once I might add. I always seem to forget that darned plug and first start up - "oh yeah, the airbag switch".
