97 4runner, upgrade to chrome bumpers
Hello.. I'm new to this board, been lurking around for a week or two. I tried performing a search and didn't get a definitve answer, so here goes..
I have a '97 4Runner with painted bumpers. It appears as though the previous owner learned how to park 'by feel' as both the front and rear bumper is a bit dented up. Also the rear corner pieces are starting to rust through. What year(s) are a direct replacement for chrome bumpers? Will any thirdgen 96-02 chrome 4Runner bumpers be a simple remove and replace?
Secondly I'm looking to upgrade the stock steel wheels with the toyota split three spoke design. I see they are avaliable in both 15" and 16"... I assume both with fit with proper tires, but what is the recommended size to go with? My 4Runner is prepelled by the mighty 4 cylinder 2.7L.
Thanks for your time!

Welcome to YotaTech..... any bumpers from 96-98 will bolt on and if you like the big lip bumpers of 99-02 those should fit .... what size tires and wheels you have now? also if you have any pics post them up useing photobucket

The painted black bumpers means that is the base model, 15" steel wheels, 4 cyl, 2wd, etc.
As mentioned, the 96-98 stuff should all fit just fine with no modifications. Your gearing is such that I'd stick with the 15" alloys for gas mileage or you can move up to the stock 16" rims and 265/70s but expect much more sluggish acceleration and a decrease in gas mileage (unless you wanted to regear your diff).

Like stated above I would get aftermarket bumpers because they are much cheaper, however since you want the crome, get those. The best place to get those is probably off the internet unless you work in the automotive industry, then you might be able to get them from a collision parts supplier. Look for parts that are CAPA certified as they should be as good as originals.

Well I'm not a big fan of chrome either but they'll look a helluva lot better then the painted grey ones I have stock. I just figured someone on this board would be willing to part with their stockers, cheap.
My 4Runner is a pretty stock SR5.. 5-spd 2.7L 4WD with roof rack, power rear window and rear wiper.. I think that is about it for options (if those are even options). I've had it since 2003, bought it with 117,000kms on the clock.
I'll look into the aftermarket world for bumpers, however I don't think big black bumpers would look very good on a white 4Runner. I'll post some pics up when I remember to take some updated photos.

i think black would look ok, but if you like chrome, then get them. no big deal.
your runner must have had a brush guard or something looking at the dents in the front bumper...?

sorry guys.. profile filled out.
I don't think the dents in the front bumper are from a bush guard, this truck is absolutly unmolested (at least it was when I bought it) I think the dents in both the front and rear bumper are from an small highway/traffic accident, althought the VIN# turns up clean. The rear bumper has a couple very similar dings too. I've recently realized that the hood doesn't line up perfectly, nor does the hatch.
kennyracer77, u have a pm.

Hey when I said aftermarket, I ment OEM style aftermarket. They look exactly like Toyota ones but they are made by a Collision Company. Therefore they are much cheaper.

hey brisk..welcome to yT where in BC are you @? im in the lower mainland. dont forget to drop by n say hi @ the BC chapter forum here...
the 99+ headlights use clearer lamp (and different bulb setup i believe?) its looks alot sharper & clearer, and im sure the lighting perfomance increases as well. our 96-98 lamps (head & corner) are of the 'frosty' variety. not so nice looking. in 01-02, new tail lamps were also introduced, and look very nice. Clearer lamps used again to match the front...not like our 'frosty' tails. its a nice asthetic upgrade, one ive been trying to do but cant seem to get my hands on a set. ahh well. better things to spend my $ on..
oh were you able to find any split 3 spoke wheels? i've got some here if you havent scored a set yet. and i also have a front bumper..umm..its kinda bent though haha. ill have my rear one available soon too..but thats in worse condition im afraid
