91 4runner cruise control ?

newbie ? I have a 1991 4runner v6 auto

When I set the cruise on the highway at 65-70 mph it likes to kick in and out of overdrive. It doses it on hills and level road surface. If I don’t set the cruise and lock my foot so to speak it dose not kick in and out of over drive. Any thoughts.

My '90 5 spd with the 3.slow V6 WISHED it could hunt for the right gear when I had the cruise on in hilly terrain, especially with any kind of load. The 3.0 seems to labor to maintain speed under normal circumstances. My only suggestion is, if you haven't already, perform a few mods to pick up whatever performance you can. I had my timing advanced about 2 degrees which also seemed to help, as did running 89 octane whenever I would tow.

Distributor I believe. Thats just the way it is with the 3.0L. You might try lowering your speed.

I learned that with my setup, If I set cruise at around 2200 rpm, that equates to around 55 to 60 mph. That gives me a good balance of rpm, torque/hp, and wind resistance that will minimize the cruise control dropping out of overdrive here where I live.

I still find that I dont use cruise control as much because of the way it tries to maintain speed. Ive never got into it but there are some sensors that check speed and I guess throttle setting and vaccume that is the basis for the cruise control. I think there may be some resistors that govern the speed drop and such allowable that might could be changed to allow for a larger fluctuation in speed. Just something I never felt enough pull towards to really look into.

You might find that with an adjustment in highway speed that you drive along with a few tweaks like exhaust mods and other easy mods, that the hunting may can be lessened.

Thank you I will try the 2 degree advance. Here in Wisconsin most people go 75-90 on the highway. The posted speed is 65, if u don’t go at least 65 you are getting run off the road.

I'm surprised to hear that the 3.0 auto would still hunt while cruise control is engaged at speeds over 70-75 mph. I'd think those speeds would have you high enough in the rpm band to prevent that, unless you have some audacious hills.

Engine temps would rise when I was pulling a trailer even on 70 degree days. Not much, but enough to bug me. I was afraid of what would happen when I had to pull my bigger trailer on hot days. It worked well except for that.
Went back to stock and temps are perfect.

2003 mikem, mine also seemed to do the OD dropout as well, I found that using the ECT seems to dramatically lessen the frequency (also the gas mileage). I think I might try clipping that wire that Mike mentions above this weekend. It is really annoying kinda like a minibike with a demonic throttle governer.
