86-88 or 89-94 pick-up
Well I am going to sell my 4Runner… I think I want a truck now. I’d look for an 85 or older, but those usually have rust holes in the frame. So keep it with the Torsion Bar IFS. I could be up for a trade plus some cash, although I want to get my 4Runner back to stock (no lift, factory radio) before I sell it.
So which truck would you get? An 86-88 or 89-94?
Let’s just say that both trucks have the following.
22RE – can’t kill it and easier to work on.
5 speed – can’t stand Autos
Extended Cad – I have tools to carry along, plus I am going to put a 10” sub in it.
SR5 – I just want the gauge cluster, it has a tach.
So far the only differences are:
86-88
- Older traditional body style
- 116 HP
- Weight - 3400
- Smaller clutch (8-7/8)
89-94
- More curved body style
- 117 HP
- Weight - 3600
- Bigger clutch (9-5/16)
My plans are going to be a dependable daily driver and a once a weekend worrier on the semi easy trails. My modifications plan to be 33x10.50 BFG MT KO (keeping these from my 4Runner). With suspension I am going to add Ball joint Spacers in the front and with blocks or add a leaf in the rear.

i would get a later one... i love the look of the toyota i have now... but its old..... and normally with age especially when buying used, you dont know exactly what was done to that truck in a prior lifetime.... newer ones have had less time to have been abused...

ive got a 94, not SR5, with tach. its either or, but older ones do have more owners. i love them all. pondering purchasing a 86, but what would one do with a 86 crawler and a 94? what would the 94 on 33's be used for?????????

well I said SR5 with tech becuse I know all SR5 had a tach, yes i know that some DLX came with a Tach.
So other than the body and interior they are the same truck.

The older trucks had a design flaw that would contribute towards rust in the bed, and there is not much that you can do to fix it. This was fixed with the '89-'95 style beds.

those 1st gen trucks look really cool but its like some of the other guys have said its getting harder to find a clean one. and the bed without hooks is a california bed. they came over seas without beds and they were installed buy the dealler. the jap bed has hooks. thats the way the parts guy @ dealer explained it to me. but you can still find some rust free beds from TAP. http://www.taprecycling.net/modules....view_album.php
also you can swap the cluster from a 4runner with tach just change your oil pressure pickup. and you got a factory tach.
definatlly 1st gen, if you can't find a really clean one, buy on with blown motor cheap and build it the way you want it. good luck

1st gen you can change the gauge cluster out with the oil pressure sensor
2nd gen can you do the same?
yes, but on 2nd gen the cluster is engine specific so if your pickup has a 22re you need a cluster from a 22re equiped truck or 4runner, and you change the oil pressure pickup to a oil pressure sender. (diffrent voltage will blow the o/p gauge) .

just to clarify, a 1st gen 4x4 is '79-83. 2nd gen is '84-88, 3rd gen is '89-95.
i like the '84-88s better than the '89-95 trucks, but they're growing on me...a little more rounded looking like my pickup.
clutch is no issue, if it ever blows up, you can swap the bigger one in if you get a 90s flywheel.

I was calling the 84-88 1st gen, and most of the posts I've read on this forum do also.
was there a 4runner in 79-83 maybe thats why?
so 84-88 would be 1st gen 4runner but 2gen pickup? right
we could just say what year we're talking bout, could be less confusing

yep, this is mainly a 4runner site so a lot of the guys forget about us early truck guys
if you want to get really confusing, with 2wd trucks there were 2 or 3 generations before the 1st gen 4x4s...

I get confused on the trucks... my main knowledge is mainly with the 4runners...
But I am looking for major and or minor differences in the IFS and 22RE trucks.

im atually wondering about the pickups too. For me, atleast it seems like the 85-88 truck looks cooler but the 89-95 truck might be more reliable since it would probbly have les miles.plus their both built with the heavy-duty frame (unlike the tacoma)
