86 4runner transmission noise?
Hi, I have an 86 4runner with 213,000 miles and yesterday I started hearing noise in 3rd and fifth gear. In 5th it's a high pitched somewhat grinding sound. I've heard maybe this is the throwout bearing? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Been there with that one. If it's in 3rd and 5th it's a classic decription of the bearings going. (Throwout bearing is in the clutch and will make it's odd noises when it goes in relation to clutch in/clutch out, not dependant on gear.) Output shaft bearing will make noise in any gear usually, with 4th being the least noisy. 3rd and 5th noise under load means the big bearing on the thrust end of the counter rotating shaft is going. If it's getting gravely sounding - it's gone - it will likely get worst fast, so plan for a rebuild quite soon. Meanwhile, use 4th and avoid 5th. 4th is straight through the trans - no side loading, hardly any loading at all.

Aside from shipping back and forth, Marlin's prices are excellent and their rep is good. Your local Stealership, after addddding up parts and labor and enviro fees and shop rags and bathroom supplies and coffee kitty will want 2000+ to rebuild the trans.
