They can go bad, not very often.
Most of the time they just need to be cleaned but they are one of the most sensitive sensors () on a Yota.

I somehow initiated the flashing 4WD lights this evening. I was leaning over to the passenger side getting something off the floor and bumped the 4WD lever into "N" (while slowly rolling down my driveway in "D"). It's obviously stuck in 4WD and the 4WD & center diff light are blinking.

I need to read up quickly on how to manually get it back into 2WD as I'm using the truck for a run to the beach early tomorrow morning.
