4runner = dead?
so i was driving up the highway today to my girlfriends house and when i changed lanes to pass someone i pressed on the gas and my RPM's redlined and my speed stayed went no where, i tapped it again and it did the same thing so i pull over on the side and turn my 4runner off, give it about 5 minutes and tried again. this time it stayed on 0 and my RPM's just would go up. it kinda seemed to me that it was stuck in neutral somehow.
i waited for a tow truck to arive and take it back to where i live to get work at a transmission place(i assumed it was the transmission). has anyone ever had any of this happen before and about how much did it end up costing to get it fixed?

i had the same problem in a 91 Z28 with a 700r4 transmission, i was on the highway and the same thing that you described happen to me, i ended up having to replace the whole transmission, the reason this happened to my car is because i had a transmission leak and i ran it too low on fluid because i use to be car-stupid. i hope you don't have to end up replacing the whole transmission, it isn't cheap.

i had been having transmission problems for about the past month randomly. it would act weird when fully stopped then kinda spin tires and jump forward and go. and then sometimes it would feel like it didnt wanna shift up to the next gear till i laid on the gas a little harder.
i checked the trans. fluid about a week or two ago and i was good so who knows.

sounds like tranny. is it an auto or stick? if its a stick, then those trannys are stronger than hell, it might be your clutch. but then again it might not be. keep us updated! we want all the juicy details!

That'd be the tranny. I don't know if replacing the neutral safety switch applies to this situation, just a thought though. It sure beats the hell out of rebuilding/replacing the tranny.

Base models are no longer offered, therefore no more 4cylinder engines. The optional electric rear differential lock has been discontinued. The 3RZ-FE engine models and the 5VZ-FE engine models with a manual transmission have been discontinued. The 4Runner is now available only with the 5VZ-FE engine with an automatic transmission in the 2WD or 4WD models.
I'm very interested to see what the shop says about your transmission, so please keep us updated.

So when I get one , and supercharge it, I'm gonna need to get a 2000, or older, so I can have the stick, and the E-Locker. Locker Burnouts baby, and no granny tranny to fry while doing em either!

I meant 2WD, but locked. It would still be sweet smoking all four on pavement, if I get the 7th injector too. . I'll just have to get some cheap tires at first, so I can get it out of my system.

yea when i was on the side of the road i turned it off about 3 times and restarted to see if it would do anything, i put it in 1st, then 2nd, then tried neutral for the hell of it to see if it would do anything, then reverse and all did nothing but increase my RPMs. when my girlfriend had came and picked me up she said when i would hit the gas it would go "VROOOOM" really loud and start to shake a little.
