is this a decent street and trail setup?after the 33s even the 3.4 lost some zip.i dont want to overgear but i want the power it would have had with the 225s or so that the trucks would have came with stock .i love the tires ,but i want that sport truck power too!watcha think

It seems that the general concensus is to go with the 4.88's if you have 33's. I did, it's great! The RPM's (or is it R'sPM? hah) are a bit higher than stock, but the power is back. Go for it!

if i had something 3.4 powered, i'd say 4.56s would be the way to go for 33s though.

I wish gearing was something you could easily play around with and change. It would certainly be nice to see what 4.56's would be like, and then change back to 4.88's on a whim!

Yeah i think kyle was right, 4.56's sound more like what you need since you do a lot of road driving. the 4.56's will give you plenty of pick up on the road and help your crawl ratio off-road considerably, while still maintaining better gas mileage than the 4.88's.

I was under the impression that with 33s(285s), the gear ratio to go with was 4:88? I'm going to be replacing mine soon and would like to know for sure which ones. 4:88 or 4:56??

I have 285s and want to bring it back as close to stock as possible since I lost some umph when lifting and adding taller tires.

I believe the consensus is 4.88's for auto's with 33's and 4.56's for 33's for 5spd's for mixed use. For mainly offroad use, then 4.88's for the 5spd also.

if you have the v6 auto the 488's are on the low end. ive looked into this and found out ill need to go up to 529's with 33's to keep it as close to stock as possible. do a search on gearing and you should find some threads that have links to tables for ratios etc. hope this helps.

If you have the 3.0 V6 then you are correct, with the 3.4, 4.88's would be best.

yeah, with the 3.4 i'd say bump it down a ratio from what you'd want with an "R" engine, so if you were going to run 4.88s on your 22R, go with 4.56s on your 3.4 my friend runs 4.88s with 35" SSRs on his 3.4 powered taco with a 5 speed, gets along pretty nicely

If you're looking to go wheeling alot and need more torque you should go with 4.88's. if you are more concerned about street performance than do the 4.56's. my 4.88's are a little to low for my taste on the interstate but they're perfect on the trails, which is what I wanted.

i did some number crunching and came up with 4.88s @ 60 mph in 5th @2407rpm . with the stock 225/75/15 tires with 4.10 gear @60 mph in 5th@2345 rpm. case closed im going with 4.88s i love torque.i also have a street strip car with 4.33 gears with a 3500 converter.......you otta feel it launch! if the truck was a 4 speed i would of went with 4.56 gear ,but with overdrive screw it get the deeper gears.i also tow a trailer with a quad and a bike. thanks guys i love this site!

if it's any matter, I get 7100 rpm @ 70 in 5th on my 285/75/16's. it's pretty high. I guess your going to have to drive with it that way to believe me. 2400 sounds low to me with 285's.

I can start off in 2nd gear with my 4.88's and I barely have to give it any gas when wheeling in 4LO, it just idles and crawls over everything, also makes descents nice and controlled. You'll like the 4.88's.

EDIT: I MEANT TO SAY 3100 rpm, NOT 7100 rpm
