3rd Gen Rear Axle Seals - I got hit too!

Well this morning I went out to pound out the dents from the gas tank skid plate from the recent runs.

Droped the skid and looked over. ˟˟˟˟˟! Both rear drums had oil on the bottom. Jacked the rear up and pulled one of the drums. Yep, full of oil.

I called Right Toyota in Scottsdale this morning since HS Chen had his fixed there and they re-did the seals today under the 60,000 mile power train warranty. Lifted and moded out did not seem to matter. Or the fact that I had 5.29 gears in there and the truck was covered in mud.

Cost Toyota $400. My rear diff has been out 3 time, soooooooooo that "could" have added, but sure seems like alot of people have this happen.

I know for a fact last weekend the seals were fine. I cought it right away.

Good thing you got it early, especially if Toyota picks up the bill.

I am surprised that you did not have the seals replaced when your rear was torn apart. Sounds like an odd thing to "fatigue" but perhaps it was just due. I assume that sort of damage done when pulling the axles would lead to immediate failure rather than this far down the road.

I did not replace mine when I swapped the rear eventhough I did pull the axles all the way out. No problems now some 8k down the road.

Good to see work is not keeping you off the boards all together!

Steve,

Is this the first time your '99 has had rear axle seal leaks?

Yes. But keep in mind my rear axle has been a part 3 times before this, so that "may" have helped things along.

Oh yeah, I'm at 58,700 miles. At 60,000 the warranty is over.

Talk about good timeing.

Hey, have you done the mod on the diff breater? If not, you should tell your dealer that they should just replace the breather. It doesn't cost them much and it may be what caused your seal to break. My dealership said that b/c of the repeat problems i was having that they were going to make changing the breather part of their standard procedure.

The 3rd Gen Runners have a rear axle seal leak problem.
The dealers know about it but it is a fix-the-problem if leaking type of recall.
But most of them were on the early 3rd Gens.
No biggy- easy to fix anyway

They seem to be pretty cool about this. They covered my 98 a couple times when I didnt think they would. Even with my diff breather clogged in mud, they covered the axle seal.

Suprising since its Scottsdale and all.
