I have a 1997 SR5 5 Speed 3.4

I have the neutral safety disabling switch on the dash, does this come standard on all standard shift runners? anyone ever use this to creep their rig out of mud or what not? the owners manual I believe said that is what it is for?

Is this similar to the clutch start cancel button for the manual tranny? I have not been been able to think of a situation where this would be convenient, do you have an automatic?

in the manual mentions about using it to creep out the truck in mud

so i think they mean say if the truck stalls, wont start and you are in mud

use it to crank the vehicle out

must be a rugged starter in these trucks, plus good wiring in order to tax the electrical system, starter wires etc

yes that clutch start thingy is on alot of the newer 4x4 tacomas. for the manual. all its suppose to do is help you restart even on a ascending hill w/o having to step on the clutch. since you have to step harder on the clutch when you first start. its suppose to go along with the "rugdness" factor for the tacomas.

my 94 4runner has it, i use it all the time, like when i want to start the truck but not actully get in it to push the clutch in.. and just playing around it works in both low and high range but you have to be in first gear.

I am pretty sure all Toy trucks with manual tranny had them even back in the '80s if I remember right,my friend's '87 had one and I know my ex's '94 had one and finally my '97 Runner 5 speed had one.

My 87 has one. I have used it many times. Once, my clutch slave cylinder went out and I was 3 hours from home, so I used itto start the rigat all the stoplights. Just had to drive without a clutch until I got home........
saved my arse!!!!!!

If you never end up using the clutch-start cancel switch for its intended purpose, you can use when WHENEVER you start the engine.

Normally you have to press the clutch down to start, which means the entire pressure of the pressure plate rides on the crankshaft thrust bearing when there is NO oil pressure in the engine.

Mine has a button, or had a button for it, but I imagine it was terminated long ago cause mine will crank however. I even got TWO of the buttons!

It's the same as having a 22R carb engine. Back before the engine computer, you could easily start the engine w/o using the clutch in gear or out. Mostly me and the wife usee it when the passenger wants to start the car. Mostly it is a tool on side hills when you don't want to slide back when starting. Using the e-brake works the same.

My understanding is that it is for low range 4wd (works in all modes) where you might get stuck on a hill or somewhere that you need to take off and not worry about rolling back or messing with the clutch. It's easy to do...just put the truck in low range, push the clutch cancel button, have the truck in first gear and turn the key. The truck will take off and you can just push the gas. I like it, used to do the same in my 1983 22r with no button.
