2wd performance mod advice wanted

I have bone stock 2001 4Runner SR5 Sport 2WD with the 5VZ-FE V6 motor and I am looking for any and all advice on mods to increase performance and/or fuel mileage. Please keep in mind this is not a 4x4 so Im not looking for off road mods.

Supercharge it. Only way to make any significant power gains.

not true search around there are a ton of absolutely costless ways to get small power gains out of the 5vz. For starters:

-4.5" deckplate on the airbox with k&n or other high flow filter
-intake silencer removal and intake tube removal if you wish
-ECT mod
-toyota supra MAF

between all those you can really open up the intake, just the deckplate and the ISR alone help a lot with top end. The ECT mod is a blast because you can make the engine inject more fuel and advance timing the way it would in cold conditions after its already warmed up. The supra MAF might be a little more pricey but its the last restriction on air induction and with that and all the other air intake mods there is completely unrestricted airflow right into the engine. The majority of these mods can be done for anywhere from a dollar to 10 dollars and for such a small price the difference is awesome.

There's also headers and exhaust...

OBX has header now for $275, its often on Ebay. I've heard some crap about them in the past, but supposedly they have been increasing their build quality to help get a better name for themselves.

As for exhaust, I wouldnt change the size unless you go with forced induction or an N/A build. I think 2.25" is good enough, you could go mandrel bent with a different muffler.

The combination of apalmer1's intake/fuel mods, plus headers and exhaust would definitely give you a bump in power. As far as fuel efficiency goes, I'm not sure its best to do any performance mods if you want to keep your stock mileage.

If you're looking for naturally aspirated products (cams/pistons/etc) check out http://www.lcengineering.com/

As far as forced induction does. Supercharging the 5VZ is much easier then boosting it, although I do like turbos more. But these options are very expensive; they also require lots of time, money, effort, planning, and research...

Oh for goodness sake!

Yes, you can do all that crap.

apalmers won't cost you much, headers and exhaust will.

you MIGHT see a 10 hp gain. MAYBE.

In case you were wondering, that is BARELY noticeable.

On a NA engine like yours, opening the exhaust and intake does about jack. On a blown motor, it does a whole lot.

Supercharger will give you a real kick in the pants. The rest of it is just pissing money away.

dont stupidcharge it, turbo it! sts makes a tacoma kit you can modify to fit a 4runner. will give you 240 - 340 hp depending on how nutz you want to go.

have you checked out www.customtacos.com ? thats the first place you should check out and browse to start learning performance mods to the 3.4L. THis site is great too, but customtacos has more nutty engine performance guys over there. good luck.
