So I go to adjust the valves using the haynes manuel and the offroad.com write up. The valve clearence(sp) seems to be in order.008 intake .012 exhaust . I'm new to Toyotas and not a Tech. The valve tapping is there I've heard that these engines are some what noisey. Does sounding like a diesel constatute too much noise? I have seen some write ups that say the valves should be adjusted to .007 and .011. but being a novice I don't want to burn the valves by over tightening them. Any insight is greatly appreciated. They will be a little noisy but definately not like a deisel.

Is it a stock cam? If so then use the stock specs and make sure the engine is at operating temp. I suggest doing them cold to get them close. Then warming it up, setting them again. Run it a week and check them again. It should only take you about 15-20 mins to do the job each time.

If it's a performance cam use the specs for the cam. I just put a .270 / .430 in my friends 22re and we set the valves to .007 & .009, as reccomended by the manufacturer.

How many miles on that rig? whats the timing chain look like, are the guides still there? Timing is right on?

I have never completly removed the diesel sound from my 22re. Upon suggestsions from the guy's on the board. I adjusted mine to .007 in and .011 ex when the motor is cold.
When you try and adjust things hot you run into the problem of them cooling off and messing up your tolerances.
Also take a look at the inside top of you valve cover, the last guy that adjusted mine tightened the cover all the way down and the valve adjustment screws were slapping the top of the valve cover making even more noise.
Heavier weight oil also will reduce alot of the noise but I only do that in the summer, so the oil doesn't turn into sludge in the cold mornings.

Thanks guys, I will try again next weekend as far as mileage it has 165000. The timing chain and guides look fine.

alot of guys overtighten the valve cover nuts... this will allow the rockers to tap on the cover making that noise also.

The clitter-clatter is inheritent to 22R/22RE motors. Set the gap as per spec and forget about it.

Valves have a tendency to tighten up - not loosen up. If they get too tight they hold open and you loose compression.

Having put over 300K on a 22R motor, I feel pretty certain about this.

I have had numerous 20 r/22r/22re powered vehicles. All have been a bit noisy in the valve train and for all I have always adjusted hot and as they aged I eventually tightened up the valve lash by 1 to 2 thou under the factory settings. It always quieted them down quite a bit and never caused any problems. You have gotta be careful not to go too far though as too tight will burn valves.
