2001 fuel guage acting funny (think '99 TSB)

I wen't and filled up at the local Exxon station today, did the slow fill up the neck to get the extra two gallons in and it worked fine, went right up to full. Drove across the lot and stopped. When I started the truck up again, my low gas light was on the the guage was stuck at E. SInce I had just filled up I drove home, and during the drive the needle slowly began to climb, but to just above E. When I got home, I turned the truck off, waited about 30 sec and turned the key back on, and the needle went right back to full. I doubt that it was a stuck float since the needle went right back to full. Also, it seems that the tank isn't filling like it should since I've put about 30 miles on the tank and I'm already down 1/8 tank; I usually get about 75 miles out of the first 1/8 tank when topping off the tank.

Could the heat and moisture be interacting with the ethanol gas we use here in NoVA and interfering with the gas guage or float? Has anyone else experienced this?

If I remember correctly, I think there may be a TSB for this problem. I know I was having issues with my gas gauge reporting low fuel when I infact had over 1/4 of a tank left and my Toyota dealer covered it under the TSB. I'm not sure if this carries through to the 2001s though...

Well, I took it to the dealer yesterday, and it's a shorted fuel level sensor. Unfortunately, the part is on national backorder and my extended warranty (Toyota Extra Care Platinum) won't pick up the tab for a rental car. It'll take until the end of next week at the earliest to get the part in, so now I'm driving the truck with a bad fuel guage again until the part arrives. At least its better than the Ford Focus that Enterprise gave me, what a POS!

I have the same problem. Lately, it has not been fluctuating that bad. I have had the fuel light turn on knowing I have at least 3/4 tank of gas. My 2001 limited has 56k miles and is out of warranty. Do you know how much it is to fix this problem?

Thanks

Paul

No, its covered under the extended warranty, so I'll only pay the $50 ded. I can find out and let you know, but it might not be for a week or so depending upon when they get the part in.
