Granted I dont go off road on mine, just stays on the road and tows from time to time.

Mileage is around 240 to 250 miles to a tank (when the lights comes on).

I will only get rid of mine, when a diesel is available...

thats it?? i get 300 per tank for mine, sometimes more than that. i have an 02 4door tacoma 4x4 v6 with 95k miles.. i love my truck. i dont have the trd and dont need it imo.. best vehicle i have ever owned so far.. the seats arent comfortable but i can live with that. i drive about 20-35k miles a year and no issues at all to report. in my book the tank is 18 gallons. the light comes on around 16 gallons or so..
as far as the short bed goes i even have a tool box on mine and the bed extender. i recommend the bed extender. i have used it alot going camping and hauling wood. it pulls a 21ft bassboat just fine!! as far as the rear leaf spring goes its all new to me. mine is fine. i love the room on the inside. i was gonna get a 4runner but came across this and figured hey! i can throw bleeding deer in the back, wood and whatver messy i can find and not have to worry about it.. go for it and get a toolbox and bed extender for extra storage

I have a 97 4Runner and while i loved the suv i needed something with a bed that i could haul stuff for my construction biz. I wanted a truck that could haul 4 people if nessessary (like my 4Runner) and could haul cargo in the bed so i knew a 01-04 DC Taco was the ticket!

i narrowed down my choices to a 01-04 DC Taco (2wd or 4wd) in silver, white, or gold...

too me months of searching websites and car lots from louisiana, texas, to new mexico but i finally found what i was looking for...

couldnt be happier with my silver 01 DC Taco SR5 TRD 4x4.

city or not you should be getting atleast 275 on a tank to the low fuel light. either you need some tune work like new plugs (denso),pcv valve, seafoam treatment, fuel filter or something.. 250 is sad, unless your is jacked up or what not

I have an 03 DC 4wd Taco and an 89 5spd 4runner V6, so I can give you my comparison to the two. The Taco is the hands down winner for power and smoothness. Its also the baby of my 3 trucks(I have an 84 SR5 4runner too), and I "save" it for road trips, dates, etc...I have done the deckplate mod, tundra coils and All Pro leafs, and added a campershell with a bedrug to it. I have never had to tow anything, but its really the perfect vehicle for all of my gear and dogs if we go somewhere. Having the shell has been awesome so that I don't have to smell the dog farts for 1000 miles.
The 89 5spd is smooth too, but its just not the 3.4. I did tow a vehicle back to TX with the 89 and it had no problems. However, that was 7 years ago.
Mileage on the Taco depends on conditions and how you are driving. My best ever was 22 mpg coming and going to MO without the shell and two triathon bikes in the back. Coming back from the Grand Canyon I got 20 mpg with the shell on and a full load of gear and bags. In the city, I get around 17 depending on how I drive.
Basically, if you want a V8, this is not the truck for you, but it does what its supposed to do and it does it well. Oh, yeah, I did move up one tire size when I put the lift on and it still drives fine.
