Question 2.7 liter ISR mod...

Have any of you done the ISR mod on a 2.7liter Taco?? I have been thinking about doing this to my '96, but I'd like to get some input from fellow 2.7l Taco owners before I take the plunge.. Also, if you have done this, could you please post a picture? Thanks.

(OBTW, I saw the 'Volant Intake' pics on this forum, but I'd like to find a (dare I say it ) cheaper way of doing this without sucking my wallet dry.)

Dr. Z is working on this right now I think. But, why not try it and let us know how it comes out?

But, if you dont feel comfortable, then dont feel pressured to try it.

Just think, you could be a "pioneer" for the 2.7 and have your name in front of the mod just like Dr. Z.

One man's "Pioneer" is another man's guinea pig..

I'll wait for the movie.

I made an attempt at the isr mod on my tacoma. . .

the only thing that hung me was were that silly tube that goes into the black intake pipe right over my mototr should go, so i extended it and tapped into therubber intake hose with it, not sure how well it is doing but i also removed my elbow and she has a much more agressive sounding intake as well as it seems to have more pep. i will try to get a camera to post a picture of it i used a piece of pvc about 8 inches long with a 3"-2" reducer on each end they fit perfectly.

Dr. Z. ,

I realize you are working on this but there is a line i geussit is the vacum line coming off the silencer box is it alright to leave that line unattached?? i believe it is the same thing that in one of the other threadswas called "the little golden thing" it drops down into the bowles of the motor i can't see were it endsup :-(

just wanted to put in my two cents. . .

John,

Thanks for the info.. But, I have a um, 95.5 Taco which might be a little different ( as far as vacuum hoses and the like ) and was hoping that someone with an early Taco would have glossy pics to share..

STEPS ON MY METHOD.

1. There is a evaporator canister which is removable. This will be your new home for the pvc end cap with barb fitting threaded into it as it will hook up with the FPR vacuum HOSE.

2. The metal box silencer. Is not removable however it is freakin welded onto the metal intake tube. The only way i can solve this problem is use duct tape and layer it making a blockage which is airtight. So air cant escape nor enter into the silencer.

3. With the FPR hose which used to connect to metal silencer will now have a new home since the silencer is blocked out from tape it will render it useless so now you connect the FPR vacuum hose to the homemade pvc end cap.

4. However theres another problem the existing FPR vacuum hose cant reach the PVC end cap that you just made so your going to need to buy a longer vacuum hose to accomadate this.

This is my way of doing it. It might look tacky but for me as a 19yr old who doesnt have as much money to do some hardcore stuff this will do for me.

Your probally thinking of otherways. Yes there is. And that is basically replace the metal intake tube which takes out the silencer all in one. You can use abs or pvc tube. I gave you some dimensions.

The existing intake tube is 12 inches long and 3inches in diameter.

The ribbed rubber elbow which connects the airbox to the metal intake tube is 9inches.

I hope this is helpful to all you 2.7l owners!

thanks k444. i like the pvc pipe with nipple replacing the evaporator. wonder if nixing the evap will cause problems? i will consider your moves when i get around to my isr mod.

still hoping to find a prefabbed pipe to replace entire intake pipe (and hence silencer). i am considering pvc, but i would love to find a shaped aftermarket for cheap. also considering some burley 3" reinforced hose, but it must be strong enough to hold open with the vacuum. the hose would have the added benefit of flexing with the engine revs (the 3rz sways quite a bit with the torque).

mas luego-

It does my worry is engine heat. Because there about 1 inch clearance between bottom of intake tube and top of engine block. It might melt. So id very interested as welll as a prefab 3 inch pipe.

I doubt it. Cuz a aftermarket intake system for example K&n fipk2 kit has no evaporators its just one straight pipe.

Kevin had asked me to help him with this isr mod. the problem is i live in hawaii and he lives in california. i also dont know anyone with a 3RZ-FE Motor to help me with measurements....so i wanted to post it here incase anyone feels like helping, maybe theres a possiblity of a write up... anyways the pic below show what i plan to fab up for kevin and the measurements i need. if anyone has any ideas or suggestions please post it.

pretty simple... the bigger tube connector thing will probably be as shown because i might not find a way to make it turn like the original. maybe that hose needs extension. i made all of this by lookin at pics and info that kevin gave me, i have not seen the 2.7 motor in person. so, any help will be great!

because kevin is worried of the heat, i will try to use a 3inch pipe at school if its available and jbweld the hose barbs or possibly actually weld it on. kevin are you still interested in the filter adapter for a k&N style?

Just did the tape method of the ISR MOD. i used 3 layers of ducttape. Cuz the inlet hold for the silencer is the width of duct tape!.... The time i did this i finally had a chance to cleaned the throttle body.. with valvoline throttle body cleaner. All is well and its IS LOUD!!! people turn there heads when i GAS IT!!!

i will post up pics later.. when i get home.

The last picture suggested. Is tape the existing vaccuum nippe with tape to keep inside the silencer clean just in case you want to go back to stock configuration.

guy's??

shall i call it kevo's isr mod.

LoL

Cost in materials with tax included! about $6

Hey guys, what does ISR stand for?

My 2.7 Tacoma has a small box on the intake tube just after the MAF. Approximately 8" after that, a nipple with a hose from it goes over to a diaphragm by the intake. Parallel to the rocker cover, there is another box which is much bigger than the first, and then to the throttle body.

By looking at the pics, which are a little different from what I have, wouldn't it be easy to modify and use some turbo plumbing?

Thanks for the input.
