1999 4runner Antenna

Yesterday my power antenna decided to self-destruct.... chewing, grinding noises, etc..... This is a problem as I do like to listen to the radio when driving.
A quick look under the hood and at the passengers side kick panel gives me the impression that this might not be the easiest part to extract.
If anyone has had to change this out and has any time saving tips or general advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, any recommendations on vendors who sell replacements?
The parts counter at a Toyota dealership is always a painful option.
Thanks.

Several folks over at T4R.org have replaced the factory power antenna with a Tacoma fixed mast. Once you go to a fixed mast it could easily adapt to a "stubbie"-less tall antenna. I had one on my 2nd generation and while it looked great it did not deliver as good of FM reception or distance for AM radio, but did prevent hanging up on tree limbs while off roading.

I've replaced mine with a help of a friend.

First off, you really do not need to access the motor, unless its actually the motor that is broke, but, that is usually unlikely. Its most likely the mast that is stripped.

Unscrew the top crown nut. I used the side of a flat head screw driver and turned it. This is when the power is off. Next, turn your radio on, have the motor try and push it up. if it doesnt go up, try to pull it out. The main thing here is to not brake off the plastic teeth inside the motor. If you do, then you'll have to pull it out from the fender and more work.

If you can get it out, which shouldn't be too hard, you can get just a new mast from Toyota (I think I paid $20). With the radio on, feed the teeth in, they should be pointed forward. Have your buddy turn off the radio, and help feed it in. The motor should automatically pull it in for you. Then your done. I can't remember if you put the crown nut on before or after...but, you can figure it out pretty easily which will work.

BTW -- If you do need to access it, you can pull back the plastic that lines the fender wall. Its a few screws, and it basically pops out. The hard part is to then undo the mounting bracket up in there. I would really try the mast part first though, unless you are certain that the motor is shot. I've taken apart the motor, and found that its not really made to be taken apart. There is a lot of glue holding it together, and weird stuff in there.
