1991 4runner 4WD question

I just recently bought a 91 4Runner with the automatic A340H
transmission. I can't find a definitive answer on the web about this,
so I thought I'd post here.

Is the 4WD system on this vehicle shift-on-the-fly, or do I need to
stop/slow down significantly first?

I had a Wrangler, you could engage at up to 55mph for 4WD hi, had to basically slow to a crawl for 4LO.

Please respond with the allowable shift speeds for both 4WD hi and 4WD
lo if you know them.

I also have a 91 4R with the auto and I do shift on the fly err while driving but not at high speeds. I will do it when climbing but none the less I do slow down so as to not kill my trans.

You can safely engage your 4wd at speeds up to 50 miles per hour. You should always be stopped (or damn close to it) when switching into 4 lo.

CL should also have mentioned it is safe if you are not using lockers. I could just imagine the twist of the rig going into 4 at 50 as the locker locks up. yikes.
